24 states consider bills to ban natural hair discrimination

EVANSVILLE, Ind., -- Nearly half of state legislatures will consider bills in the near future to protect a person's right to wear hair naturally.

The bills -- introduced in 24 states -- are modeled after a California law put into effect Jan. 1 that bans discrimination based on hairstyle.

Proponents say employers, and even schools districts, often ban hairstyles historically worn by racial minorities -- like braids, dreadlocks and twists.

"Our hairstyles influence the way employers and teachers treat us," said Courtney McKinney, a spokeswoman for the Western Center on Law and Poverty, which advocated for the California law along with several other organizations.

"It can impact your education and your ability to get a job. That's why we need laws to protect our right to wear our hair the way it grows out of our heads," McKinney said.

Hair discrimination against black people has a long history in the United States.

Before the Civil War, enslaved people from Africa, for whom long hair was culturally important, were forced to shave their heads, said Wisconsin state Rep. LaKeshia Myers, a Democrat who introduced legislation to protect natural hairstyles.

"No child should be stopped from learning because of their hair," said Jade Magnus Ogunnaike, the campaign director for Color of Change, an online racial justice organization.

The push to pass such legislation is being spearheaded by a group called the CROWN Coalition, which stands for Creating a Respectful and Open Workplace for Natural hair.

Color of Change is a CROWN Coalition founding member, Ogunnaike said. Other founders are are Dove, the Western Center on Law & Poverty and the National Urban League.

The coalition, which formed about two years ago, chose to begin in California.

Actually I don’t know.

Once they leave the salon, care and time to return is up to them.

But a tightly braided head of hair should be easy to wash....at least the scalp portion.

Though at times they do keep those elaborate dos for quite a while.

Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, Gamestop, Skateboard shops, etc.

But I’m pretty sure your Insurance Agent, Stockbroker, Personal Physician, Real Estate Broker, or Banker, doesn’t look like that. :-)

But you are right. It is getting more common.

Only if you wear your armpit hair braided as well.
My question is: If I’m white trash can I wear my hair unwashed, oily, with tiny livestock crawling around in it as is culturally acceptable in my trailer park?

What they are banning—always what they are banning—is the individual’s right to apply his or her choice in his or her own associations, It is the effort of intolerant humanists to outlaw the right of the individual to act according to his or her preferences rather than conform to egalitarian or utilitarian dogma, which effectively diminishes traditional property rights.

braids, dreadlocks and twists

“But I think braids and dreadlocks look neat.”

Dreadlocks were introduced by the black bigot who invented Rastafarianism. They are called dread locks because they are intended to strike dread into the hearts of whites.

Essentially, they are the moral equivalent of KKK robes.

I knew a woman at work whose fingernails were painted so when she put her fingers tight together they showed a cameo of a man doggy-stylinga woman. The rest of her was not very classy either. She didn’t last very long.

It’s not about hair styles worn by black people. No one is bothered by those hair styles. It’s a subgroup of white women who are pushing for another law. There’s nothing natural about those creepy hair dyes and partial skinhead cuts worn by the drug-addled, tattooed, counter-culture white girls, and that’s what the witches are really after. Just no. Let retail employers choose who they want representing their companies face-to-face with customers.

How long will it be before this becomes the "radical" hair style for the rebellious nonconformists...

So, the hair of black people grows out of their heads in braids, weaves and dreadlocks? Fascinating.

OMG....and how much do you think that cost? Not that price matters when there is no class.

I see hands with hugely long fake nails. I don’t know how one can live a normal life with long nails almost half an inch long.

And I didn’t mention fake braids. A lot of these folk have fake braids and that costs a small fortune.

And no, I agree. Those styles are not the sort of thing Africans used for their hair.

Straightening black hair costs almost a hundred bucks depending on length and all that.

It’s very important...hair and nails.

Like I said, it’s important to most of us but it’s almost as if some folks live, die and breathe for styles that make them stand out, no matter the cost.

Yes, the photo in your comment #9. That’s what the bills are really about. Some employers are behind the push for putting bizarre grooming in the faces of customers, too—Walmart, for one. If the bill passes in your state, boycott them. Get some competition going. If the other local supermarket didn’t have a bad odor and rude employees, I would be shopping there.

When I worked in a supermarket for my first job, we were required to be well groomed (no long hair), wearing slacks, button-down shirts and shoes that shined. Every one of us was also capable of lifting cartons throughout a shift and unloading trucks. There was only one manager in the store—not dozens of waddling, bizarrely groomed things called managers.

No, this is government telling businesses how they should be run. That is not freedom.

It’s easy enough to find other reasons to discriminate. I am a firm believer in the right to associate, which in it’s negative form is the right to not associate. Additionally, the government should never tell business owners how to make HR decisions, or for that matter any decision. Some damn pencil-necked legislator or bureaucrat does not know Jack about business. Most never had the testicular fortitude to start and operate a business. They are takers, relying on confiscation of others money for their pathetic existence.

I got a haircut today and while I was sitting in the chair a woman behind me at the coat rack announced she put on the wrong coat and was sorry.
So, not really sure if it was my coat, I just looked at her in the mirror and said no problem.

When the haircut was done, I stepped outside and wanted to look at what time it was, to maybe meet my daughter after school.
Then I realized problem.
My smartphone was gone.
The lady made comments she forgot her keys. then she must have taken my smartphone from the coat pocket and put it in her bag so she could dig for her keys.
She then realized she had the wrong coat on but forgot to put my phone back.

I recently bought that phone and I do seriously need it for all kinds of reasons.

I went back in and told the person who cut my hair I think the lady with the wrong coat mistakenly took my phone so I hope to get it back at some point,. Hopefully tomorrow.

That’s all I got about hair.
Take it or leave it.

Oh except, I did meet my daughter and she told me: That is the best haircut you ever got.
I replied: And the most expensive! (almost 200 euros total)
