It was a good show.
But this guy treated his guests as if they were Gods. Acting Gods instead of just normal people like the rest of us.
He came across as uppity.
Inside the Actor’s Studio was terrific. He was a great interviewer. The Robin Williams interview was hilarious and wonderful, worth every minute. I enjoyed all of the shows. And yes, no damned political crap. I even read Lipton’s book because he was such an interesting person. RIP James.
A class act, RIP
He was a WWII Air Corp vet. I saw him interviewed on Veterans Day several years ago. He said he was proud of his service and always supported the troops.
Perpetuating the Cult of Celebrity.
I first met him in Florida in 1986 and last talked to him about 10 years ago. Big supporter of the military as he had been an enlisted man in the USAF. I’ve been a guest of his in Manhattan and out in the Hamptons where he took me flying one afternoon. He was a very kind, genuine and interesting person. RIP.
He ran a drama school. What was he supposed to do?
RIP.
Colorful life. I have an acquaintance who worked with him who said he was good to work with. But why oh why did he never have Ron Jeremy on his show?
A school or a church that worshipped people generally not worth of the admiration?
Schools often give their students access to professionals in the fields they study. Humans have been holding artists on a pedestal for centuries.
Actors aren’t “artists.” From what I’ve seen of them, most aren’t even decent human beings.
And I still dont want to hear from them.
ACting isn’t an art form? It’s a performance art. Is playing an instrument or dancing?
Oh, please. How? They don't write the story. They don't build the sets or sew the costumes. They don't arrange the lights or the sound or the effects. They stand on the shoulders of workmen, then strut their hour in front of a camera or on a stage, and that's "art?" Nope.
Its a performance art.
What does that even mean? I could call taking a dump "performance art" and since the definition is so vague, no one could contradict me.
Is playing an instrument or dancing?
Playing an instrument and dancing both have absolute requirements. There's a right way and a wrong way to play. The right notes and the wrong notes. The right steps or a missed step. There's no such standard for acting. Anyone can do it anyway he wants. It's all completely subjective.
Actors aren't artists. They're not worthy of admiration.
A Performing art I mean. It takes insight into human behavior and psychology. We know bad acting when we see it. Some people are consistently better at it then others. People like Laurence Oliver and Marlon Brando were geniuses of their field. Virutosos in the sense of a great instrumentalist.
Sorry, but I don’t see it. All my life I’ve heard what great actors Olivier and Brando and Bogart and Tracy and DeNiro and blah blah blah were. I like some of their movies but I don’t see any huge talent in their acting.
I won’t worship at that altar. Especially when you consider what reprehensible human beings so many of them were. Narcissists, drunks, philanderers, wife-beaters, rapists, dopers, schizo, egoistic jackasses. Very few of them worthy of any respect, and none of them deserving the adulation they get. There are better people to bestow your admiration on.
I’m not claiming they are wonderful or even good people. Neither were a lot of painters, composers, writers etc. You’d have to throw out a lot of western civilization.
