ANCHORAGE (KTUU0 - Rookie Iditarod musher Quince Mountain's time on the Iditarod trail has come to an end.
Race marshal Mark Nordman made the call around 11:38 a.m. to withdraw Mountain from the race at the Unalakleet checkpoint.
Nordman made the decision based on rule 36 of the official Iditarod race rules regarding competitiveness.
Rule 36 -- Competitiveness: A team may be withdrawn that is out of the competition and is not in a position to make a valid effort to compete. The Race Marshal may consider, but is not limited to, weather, trail conditions and the overall pace of the Race when invoking this rule. A musher whose conduct, constitutes an unreasonable risk of harm to him/her, dogs or other persons may also be withdrawn.
Mountain had 14 dogs in harness at the time of the withdrawal.

Those mushers are serious. They keep going even days after the winner crosses the finish line!
“Those mushers are serious. They keep going even days after the winner crosses the finish line!”
They are out in the middle of nowhere, they may not have much of an option but to keep going until they get to a check point with infrastructure.
The race does not end until the last musher crosses the finish line that is how the Iditarod works.
In fact I think there is actually an award for the last one to cross the line.
I would vote to eliminate him just because I would suspect he’s on the lam and using a cheesy psuedonym.
The race is over when the last musher finishes. Them’s the rules. He was pulled because he was something like a day behind the next to last musher.
When the last musher is still on the trail, they hang a red lantern on the finish line. It’s kind of a thing to win the red lantern.
His personal goal of running the Iditarod has been crushed.
