In Russian war movies they are, of course, the good guys.
Both the Russians and Germans were socialists, no fan either but I find it hard to root for the Soviet communists. The soviets were anti-God, the Germans were not.
Hitler was anti-God; he simply didn’t have time to eliminate religion yet.
Belarus lost more people per capita than any other “country” during WWII (though of course it wasn;t a country at the time). The numbers get skewed, especially in Ukraine, due to the number of non-Russian people in the USSR that were recruited to fight against Stalin.
Don’t see it as a matter of rooting for one or the other. They were our allies, they paid a high blood price to put the sickle and hammer flag over Berlin. That was blood we did not have to shed to crush the Nazis.
Just that they are referred to as “Russians” instead of “Soviets” shows the inroads they’ve made in re-writing history. They were primarily Russians at the top, subjugating numerous minorities along the borders where Russians lived.
