An additional mechanism facilitating viral cell entry and subsequent damage may involve the so-called antibody-dependent enhancement (ADE). ADE is a very well-known cascade of events whereby viruses may infect susceptible cells via interaction between virions complexed with antibodies or complement components and, respectively, Fc or complement receptors, leading to the amplification of their replication [2] (fig. 1). Ecuador has one of the highest rates of COVID-19 in all of Latin America – with 10,128 cases and 507 deaths in a country of just 17 million people.
But the situation may be far worse than what the official numbers show. In fact, one Ecuadorian official says it appears that thousands more people may have died of the disease than his government is reporting.
Jorge Wated, who heads a government task force charged with collecting and burying bodies in Guayaquil, the epicenter of the outbreak, said that in the first 15 days of April, 6,703 people had died from either COVID-19 or natural causes. Previous to the coronavirus outbreak, he said, the monthly figure was around 1,000.
“This is the hard reality we are dealing with,” Wated said in a nationally televised address.
And Interior Minster María Paula Romo has admitted that the true death count is higher but blamed a lack of widespread testing for the discrepancy. Even President Lenín Moreno has dismissed the official figures.
“We have to tell the truth,” he said in a speech last month. “We know that in terms of both infections and deaths, the numbers are too low. There is not enough testing.”
The legions of sick are running doctors ragged, especially in the Pacific port of Guayaquil which is Ecuador’s largest city and home to about 70 percent of COVID-19 cases.
Dr. Eduardo Herdocia, who is just 18 months out of medical school, says he is currently taking care of about 200 patients whom he believes are infected with coronavirus, based on their respiratory symptoms. But due to lack of testing, only about two dozen have been diagnosed as positive. Because Guayaquil’s hospitals are overflowing with confirmed CV patients, Herdocia makes house calls.

Different coronaviruses have been prevalent in mammals and poultry, but most of these coronaviruses are limited to infecting specific species of animals, and generally cannot infect humans. Similarly, several common coronaviruses in humans do not infect other animals. However, certain coronaviruses from bats, such as SARS and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) viruses, can often infect many animals and humans. SARS-CoV-2 is currently popular among a large number of people around the world, and the risk of introducing animals in close contact with humans is increasing.
Therefore, there is an urgent need to carry out close contact with humans on the susceptibility of domestic animals to SARS-CoV-2, to assess whether domestic animals are facing the risk of SARS-CoV-2 and become a potential intermediate host, to provide the prevention and control of SARS-CoV-2 Scientific basis.
In view of the current global epidemic of COVID-19, it is highly likely to evolve into a common infectious disease, and it is urgent to establish a stable and reliable animal infection model to meet the needs of vaccine and drug research and development evaluation.
Relying on the National High-level Laboratory for Animal Disease Prevention and Control (P4 Laboratory) and the State Key Laboratory of Veterinary Biotechnology, the team of Bu Zhigao, Harbin Institute of Veterinary Medicine, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Academician Chen Hualan, and Wu Guizhen, Chinese Institute of CDC Viral Disease Prevention and Control, Researcher Tan Wenjie and others systematically studied the susceptibility of dogs, cats, pigs, chickens, ducks and other common pets, domestic animals, poultry and model experimental animals ferret to SARS-CoV-2.
Through experimental infection with SARS-CoV-2, the clinical manifestations and pathological changes of vaccinated animals and cohabiting animals were observed, and the viral load of organs and tissues, the discharge of respiratory and enteroviruses, and the positive of antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 virus in animals were detected.
It was found that SARS-CoV-2 has weak replication ability in dogs, pigs, chickens and ducks, but can efficiently replicate in the upper respiratory tract of ferrets and the respiratory and digestive systems of cats.
Experimental infected cats can transmit SARS-CoV-2 through the air; some cats can cause severe morbidity or even death after infection. The incidence of young cats is obviously more serious than that of older cats. Histopathological observations confirmed that virus-infected cats can cause varying degrees of lung inflammation and intestinal mucosal damage; immunohistochemical studies have found epithelial and olfactory bulb cells of the upper respiratory tract (nasal cavity, palate, tonsils), mucosal gland epithelial cells of the trachea and bronchial mucosa , Intestinal mucosa epithelium and other parts have a large number of viral infections (Figure).
The results show that ferrets can be used as animal models for SARS-CoV-2 vaccine and drug evaluation; dogs, pigs, chickens and ducks are not susceptible to SARS-CoV-2, and have important guiding significance for virus host tracing; more importantly, Cats are highly susceptible to SARS-CoV-2. The study calls for close monitoring and protection of cats in epidemic areas to avoid contact with the source of infection and prevent them from becoming possible hosts of transmission or storage.
This research was supported by the National Key R & D Program of the Ministry of Science and Technology and emergency special projects 2020YFC0846500, 2018YFC1200601, 2016YFD0500301 and other projects. Related results were published online in Science on April 8, 2020.

There was one reported case in HK a while back (probably paranoia or false positive from crappy Chinese test) but it has been determined that canines are not susceptible. So I’ve heard.
I was following his story. Jack was airlifted to UPenn for the remdesivir trial because he was so critically ill and it was a ‘right to try’ situation. I agree that they wouldn’t have given him a placebo. It would have been a death sentence for him and he wouldn’t be walking out of that hospital to prolonged applause.
Those rises in weeks 12-14 for flu and pneumonia were likely CCP-19 cases that went under the radar.

This past Saturday we went to Arcpoint Labs to get the antibody test, which they receive from Shanghai, and our test were negative.

In October 2019 husband and wife friends of mime had returned from Italy. She is in her 50s. Avid tennis player and in good health. The next day she was sick and admitted to a hospital in Boston. Low grade fever, double pneumonia, kidneys failings, very weak, no sense of taste or smell. Hospital had no idea what they were dealing with. My buddy called and told me what was going on. CDC, DHS, DoS had no travel restrictions posted. I suggested they have her tested for NDM-1 which came back negative. Within a couple of days she felt better and was released. She is doing fine now. Her doc called and asked her to get tested for antibodies which most likely will be negative. I will advise of the results. Fascinating stuff.
