Tony Shalhoub Revives His ‘Monk’ Character; Reveals He Had COVID-19

It was a Monk revival of sorts in the first episode of Peacock’s At-Home Variety Show, hosted by Seth MacFarlane.

In the episode titled “Mr. Monk Shelters In Place”, Tony Shalhoub reprised his memorable titular germophobic character Adrian Monk, whom you might guess is having a tough time during the coronavirus quarantine.

At the end of the video, Shalhoub appears as himself, revealing that he and his wife, Brooke, had both tested positive for coronavirus and have since recovered. “It was a pretty rough few weeks, but we realize that so many other people have and had it a lot worse,” he said.

The video opens with Monk furiously washing his hands as he sings “99 Bottles of Beer on The Wall” (eventually getting down to 16), slips on latex gloves covered by socks, runs his fresh produce though the dishwasher, microwaves his mail… well, you get the idea. He even stays six feet away from his laptop during a video conference.

A few Monk alums also appear in the video, including Traylor Howard as Natalie Teeger, Ted Levine as Capt. Stottlemeyer and Jason Gray-Stanford as Randy Disher. At one point, Monk pleads for more hand sanitizer, saying “I’m down to my last 12 cases,” to which Disher replies, “He’s hoarding!”

Monk aired for eight seasons on USA Network from 2002 to 2009. There has been talk throughout the years of a Monk movie, which once came close, but never happened. All eight seasons of Monk are on Peacock as part of the streaming service’s acquired library content. Peacock is currently available to Comcast Xfinity Flex and X1 subscribers. It launches nationally on Wednesday, July 15.

Timely case of verminophobia. Perfect show for the times. They would be idiots not to do this NOW.

The show is all over cable. I catch it on H&I on Thursdays. And it is on other stations as well. Always liked Shaloub . The Italian cabbie on Wings was a great role.

My kids mock me for my little odd doings. If I have 11 eggs, I will throw one out to make it even and balance the carton.

The other day I was looking for my Krim Tomato plants among my 20 tomato plants. I found 5...but knew there must be six...and voila...found it.

We all have a little bit of Monk in us.

They should’ve invited Sharona back, Natalie Teeter never really fit in.

Yeah, sometimes I joke about having to fight off my OCD so I can complete some task at work or something.
Come to think of it, Covid-19 has given me the excuse to do some things I'm inclined to do without feeling odd...

I had a cold that turned into a nasty sinus infection.

Do I get a participation trophy, too?

Even Monk fans differ, I think Natalie was a refreshing change and think her character fit in perfectly. Her daughter and she were a loving dose of kindness and a civility check for Monk. Sharona was vastly different than Natalie, and that was what kept it fresh.

Monk is also on either Prime or Roku channel. If you like that sort of show, Doc Watson is also on one or the other of those channels. Free.
