LONDON (Reuters) - British actor Ian Holm, best known for his roles in “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy and “Alien”, has died aged 88, the Guardian newspaper said on Friday.

The actor, who received an Oscar nomination for his performance in the 1981 film “Chariots of Fire”, had died from a Parkinson’s related illness, the paper said.

“It is with great sadness that the actor Sir Ian Holm CBE passed away this morning at the age of 88,” his agent told the paper. “He died peacefully in hospital, with his family and carer. Charming, kind and ferociously talented, we will miss him hugely.”

Holm began his career on stage working as part of the Royal Shakespeare Company and gained international exposure when he was cast as android Ash in the 1979 “Alien” film.

He died peacefully at an advanced age, surrounded by loving family. That’s the way most would most wish to go. That, or dying in a blaze of glory, for some righteous cause.

Grat actor. I enjoyed his performances for years, starting with Richard, Duke of Gloucester (AKA Richard III) in The Wars of the Roses, televised in 1966. I also like his Napoleon in Napoleon and Love, Frodo in the radio adaptation of Lord of the Rings, and his many film roles. Glad to see he lived to such a ripe old age.

I liked him as Fluellen in Kenneth Branagh’s Henry V

Chariots of Fire was on TCM Sunday night, made me think of when I saw it in the theatre when it first came out.

It looks like it is available on DVD, which is nice since so many fine British productions from that era were chucked or taped over by faceless and mindless simpletons at the BBC.

Wars of the Roses is only available AFAIK on a British Region 2 DVD which requires a hacked player (which I have). The Napoleon series is available in the USA.

He was so good as Sam Mussibini in “Chariots”. Rest in peace.
