The issue is that they mistake the shape of a surf board for the shape of a seal. Then when they come up for a bite, they realize that they made a mistake. Unfortunately, that initial bite is sometimes fatal.

I don’t buy that explanation, which has been fed to us for some years now. Sharks have been around for hundreds of millions of years, seals for millions. Most animals have imprinted onto the shape, size and movements of their predators and prey. I raised rabbits-whenever a shadow passed over them from above, they flattened themselves against the ground automatically because birds of prey have been a threat to them for millenia. Sharks, I believe, know full well that what they’re seeing isn’t a seal, but being curious and hungry, take a bite anyway to see if “it’s” edible. Scientists have found Great White sharks teeth in logs that have floated out to sea....
