How can a person be forced by any business or government entity to wear a mask (which affects the respiratory system) without having a physical exam by a licensed doctor who approves such an action?

How is wearing a mask effective and very much worth the effort for the following?

A mask is not useful to a person with severe asthma and the uncontrontrolable anxiety that follows or is precipitated by the mask.

A person with COPD or any pulmonary disorder where oxygen levels are already impaired.

A person with cardiac issues such as atrial fibrillation or worse where oxygen levels are compromised.

A person with immune suppression issues whether from prior illness or treatment because of the concentration of bacteria and virus inside the mask.

A blanket statement that a mask is effective to these people takes on an entirely different meaning in this conversation.

Your referenced scientific study describes what the masks are and how well they work, and measures their effectiveness at filtering particles. Particle sizes tested were >5 um and <5 um. Note that virus aerosol particles are <2.5 um, (and most are about 1 um) too small for these masks to filter out.

From your referenced scientific study: The N95 mask (best one available) is 85% effective for <5 um particles when perfectly fitted (no gap) and only 34% effective (with gap). The cheaper surgical mask is 76% effective when perfectly fitted (no gap) and 50% effective (with gap).

Because virus aerosol particles are smaller than 5 um (as small as 1 um) it is obvious why these masks will NOT prevent aerosol infection by Covid-19.

That's probably why the scientific studies reviewed by Dr. Denis G Rancourt, PhD all discovered that neither surgical masks or N95 masks were effective in Preventing transmission of viruses.

You're welcome. The whole thing about comparing the wearing of masks while performing surgeries to wearing masks while grocery shopping smacks of the same comparison people make about performing surgeries and cutting hair when it comes to licensing.

It's that kind of logic that led me to stop not drinking.

True.
Still, what else are these people to do?

They’re trying to protect those they love. Using what they can do.

paper masks cannot be washed. moth ones frequently are not - i e seen some beauties in the grocery store

I guess there are people that never wash their socks also. I'm failing to see your point.

I thought about mask design after my initial reply, and thought about the seal problem of masks around their edges. I spent a lot of hours in my youth under water with a mask. If it had a bad seal, it made the dive miserable. The mask used as an air filter needs a good seal around the edges. Many of the masks I have seen are poorly designed. Try finding one with a flex fit.

Like most “public health” requirements, its not for you. Its for the other folks when you go out with an active case of Covid and spit, sneeze and cough your germs into the air.

But, persons stupid enough to go out and roam around whilst sick should wear a mask.

For my part, I am not going out if I get sick. Hence, no mask.

Disposable gloves, however, protect one from the disease left on doorknobs, gas pump handles, etc. by sick persons.

Hence, lots of gloves.

Surgeons wear them because they are cutting you open.

Before the Wuhan Kung Fu Flu, did your GP wear a mask while listening to your heart just inches away from your face? Why not?

Wear masks if you want. I'm fine with that. Just don't make it mandatory.

Mrs. Eagle and I wanted to go out to dinner tonight for our anniversary but the restaurant wouldn't even let us in without masks. We ended placing a to-go order and waited in our car for half an hour.

Dinner just wasn't the same but the after dinner festivities was fun.

TMI?

No need to be sorry. They’re mandatory here in our rural area of Commiefornia as well. That restaurant is the first place that wouldn’t let us in.

Viruses are some of the smallest particles on earth, they cannot be viewed without an electron microscope. I have serious doubts about cloth face masks being able to stop them.

Every time I see this argument made on FR, I cringe, and remind myself that its not just Liberals who have faulty thinking.

I wonder if studies have found the virus viable in 0.125 micron vapors? And if they were transported in them, how long before the vapors evaporated leading the virus to self-destruct?

The mask does not "stop" a CO2 molecule at all. But the mask does accumulate air that has been exhaled from the previous breath within the mask, as well as moisture in the used air exhaled from your lungs.

Most of the air exhaled escapes the mask, but the air that remains in the mask before the next breath has lowered oxygen content and increased CO2 content.

The next inhale pulls fresh air into the mask and mixes it with this excess CO2 from the previous exhale. You lungs now fill with air with a reduced oxygen content and increased CO2 content.

Each breath you take repeats this increase in CO2 and reduction of oxygen that actually gets into your lungs. The longer you wear the mask, the worse this imbalance becomes.

This one is easy to check for yourselves.

Get yourself a cheap Pulse Oxymeter from your local pharmacy. ($15-$30+)

Put it on your finger and check your blood oxygen level.

Now put on your favorite mask, and just breath for a while.

Note your %SpO2 level after 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 15 minutes, 30 minutes.

I did this test on myself. My normal %SpO2 is 96% and my resting heart rate is about 62 bpm.

After 10 minutes walking slowly around my house with the procedure mask on my %SpO2 was 88% and my pulse was 85bpm.

I took the mask off, breathed deeply, and watched the %SpO2 rise to 94% within 20 seconds.

Finally, keep in mind that the excess CO2 in your lungs is probably more serious than the shortage of oxygen.

Surgeons do not wear masks to prevent virus transmission. No Dr who was suffering from a virus would be operating on any patient.
