Say a group of Antifa is coming down your street. You want to pick up a weapon just in case that will keep you safe and deter any crap. Which would you grab? A 12 gauge pump action shotgun or an AR-15? I lean towards the shotgun that we used in Coast Guard boardings of drug smugglers but you can convince me otherwise.
My 12 gauge with the ‘plug’ removed and all slots full.
“An A-10 Warthog would be far more efficient”
I’m with you. If we’re going to do childish fantasies we might as well toss in the A-10.
i personally would grab the AR-15 if both were at hand, but certainly I’d grab the nearest firearm for sure!
anyone without firearms ready for quick defense nowadays with all the SorozNazi BLM/Occupy/Antifa street thugs rioting burning raping pillaging in the streets.. and breaking into people’s homes and stores.,.,,
There’s yet another organized riot today in town so that businesses have had to board up their windows and the cops have had to pay overtime for all hands to line the streets (plus the fire department and reserves are reportedly providing immediate backup support, plus cooperative cops from other cities are on immediate call )
the advertising posters for these Soroz brownshirt riots display violent attacking
I was in the USCG also; they were using the Ithaca model 37 back then. I had a helluva time with it since I only weighed 140 lbs. The rangemaster allowed me to shoot with a Stearn's vest for recoil since they would be used during boardings anyway.
One thing to consider is that in any defensive shooting, the police will impound your weapon as evidence, and most likely will do anything possible to avoid returning it. They might want to keep LEO issue type weapons (AR-15, SIG, Glock) for themselves. In some jurisdictions, they will destroy the gun in all cases, and just write you a check if you win in court.
Semi-auto tactical 12 gauge in hand, 9mm carbine on my back, pistol on hip (extra matching 9mm mags for both), and fighting knife as final fallback.
Deer rifle (or any other weenie-named "Killer assault rifle" for longer ranges.
A brace of hand grenade3s.
a group can be a lot of things... i would use the shotgun... to disperse the crowd and get to my thompson drum fed 45...
when that jammed i would revert to my glock with extended clips, while i reloaded my 12 gauge...
12 inch marine carbine steel, and battle axe for the hand to hand stuff to follow... eventually succumbing to the crowd scattered around me.
to be villainized posthumously in the press and court proceedings then eventually touted as an American Hero bravely making a tremendous last stand.
Garand with fixed bayonet.
What would I grab?
A sign that reads “MY NEIGHBOR DOESN’T BELIEVE IN GUNS” with an arrow pointing next door...
Realistically, unless you are already prepped, locked, and loaded, it’ll be whatever you can access the fastest.
And, “during these uncertain times”... you SHOULD already BE prepped, locked and loaded, and I mean ammo carrier/ trauma plate vest/webgear, footwear to protect your feet, and whatever else you need to fight your way clear, accessible quickly and easily.
I keep a “crowd pleaser” handy in the home; my son has access to his own crowd pleaser as well. Loaded with lots of angry little hornets and wasps...
But - having the tools is one thing; having the will to use them is the key.
These people mean you and your family harm; treat them accordingly.
Woof!
You' d have to have a rather large back yard to house one of those.
12ga pump.
Even if you know nothing about firearms, you understand the sound of a round being chambered.
My Dawg brother... WOOF!!

all the more reason to have backups.
Remington 870DM 12ga. with 4 extra mags loaded with .00 buck. Back-up a Hi-cap 9mm with spare mags.
Backed up by son with AR and spare mags. Back-up a Hi-Cap 9mm nad spare mags.
3rd line wife with a 9mm carbine and spare mags. Back-up .357 with spare speed loaders.
Each would engage then fall back while getting cover fire.
The correct answer, as many have opined, is both. At long range the AR gives sustained fire power, rapid reloading and will penetrate armor below level III. Also the AR is easier for someone with a less robust frame to use, i.e. my wife.
But, from a defensive standpoint at close range the shotgun is best. If you are defending your home from a mass of protesters attacking your property, a 12 gauge loaded with 00 buck will plow a path through any group. My home defense shotgun has four in the tube and one in the chamber. Thats a lot of plowing.
There is (and this is just my opinion) another advantage to the shotgun. Adrenaline takes over in these situations and untrained (even trained) people tend to miss with ball ammo. I told my daughter to point the shotgun at the knees because if you jerk when pulling the trigger you will still stay on target. If you fire straight and true they will be laying on the ground screaming for their leg back. If you jerk a little you get a groin or gut shot, jerk a lot a lot you get chest or higher.
Doubtful in a defense of property situation you will start out shooting at long range. Shoot someone even a 100 meters out, not yet threaten you or your property, and you get a free pass to prison. Thin the herd with a 12 gauge then switch to the AR for anyone not interested in running away at that point.
And, if you fire a big shotgun people flinch. The Ka-Boom a shotgun makes gets people’s attention. The less audible pop-pop-pop of an AR is not as intimidating. At least to my mind.
I’ve only got a Hipoint .45 carbine, so if that’s what I would have.
“...down your street.”?
That implies you may have neighbors close by. How much do you like them? An AR or AK will put them and their property in more danger than a shotgun. Not to mention the people the next street over.
Start with a shotgun, have a rifle as backup for when it gets so bad you don’t care.
