Self Defense-Which would you grab?

Posted on 06/29/2020 8:41:03 AM PDT by uscga77

Say a group of Antifa is coming down your street. You want to pick up a weapon just in case that will keep you safe and deter any crap. Which would you grab? A 12 gauge pump action shotgun or an AR-15? I lean towards the shotgun that we used in Coast Guard boardings of drug smugglers but you can convince me otherwise.

You have to define what kind of shotgun. Is it a single shot or a DP-12?

“down your street” - AR-15. “in the house” - shotgun

Yes...this right here

12 ga #4 buckshot is .24 caliber, and there are at least 27 of them in a 2-3/4” shell. They are moving at 1600 fps or faster. Learn how to bounce them off of hard pavement at close range to make the pattern open up even more, and you can clear the street in a matter of seconds.

I keep both at the ready; the shotgun for inside and the AR for outside.

Firearm shots indoors without ear protection are extremely loud.

I've never heard a shotgun blast indoors without hearing protection, but a few times I have had the displeasure of hearing rifle and handgun discharges indoors. It is deafening - literally. You don't have ear protection, but after the blast it sounds like you do. For a few minutes I was afraid it was permanent.

The ringing sound effect with muted background audio used in some movies, like after a bomb or grenade blast; it's a real thing.

How about a battery of 8” howitzers?
Immediate suppression, grid 123, etc.

Let’s start with a water cannon for rapid disbursement & then maybe follow up with an AR & lots of rounds. Might not even need the AR.

Street sweeper shotgun would be my ultimate wish under mob circumstances.

If only close combat the military does use shotguns, including elite units like the Seals use shotguns...
For the situation described, a 12 gauge combat shotgun would be perfect... with a .45 sidearm as backup...

12 Gauge auto shotgun would do the trick loaded with 00 Buck shot.Thats good for the close in stuff.

Further out an AR15 in 5.56mm would be very good.

.45 ACP as a back up to those.

"the police will impound your weapon as evidence, and most likely will do anything possible to avoid returning it."

True, but on the other hand, they will show up with replacements for you at the time and place of your choosing if you ask nicely...

I have fired them. But, I guess my experience is different from yours. The 5.56 seems a lot quieter, especially from an observer standpoint.

I’ve been wrong before.

And with an AR you can control a 600 yard radius around you

That is overly optimistic.

“The concussion and blast from a 5.56 in an AR is substantially greater than a shotgun, especially if indoors.”

I laugh every time I read some firearms “authority” opine that a short-barreled AR with some sort of muzzle device is the ideal weapon for inside one’s home. I’m sure it is until you fire it the first time. The concussion and blast from such a weapon might even be enough to make one involuntarily evacuate one’s bowels. Now THAT would be a distraction!

Against a group coming down the street? The AR. More wieldy, and you can deal with them from down the street.

Mena, it says you live in Texas.
can you indicate the general area?
I believe Texas has a stand your ground law.
Would that depend on if say you live near marxist Austin?

A Ruger 10/22 with a 110 round drum magazine will tend to discourage a mob.

LEO issue type weapons (AR-15, SIG, Glock) for themselves.

What does that mean? You must live in some Marxist Blue State hellhole to say something like that. Every American should have the right to arms like these. EVERY American.

I'll be keeping these very close at hand.
