Desk jobs keep people mentally sharp while physical labor increases the risk of memory and concentration problems, a study has found.
A lack of physical activity has long been thought to lead to major health conditions, including problems with cognition.
But a study has found that sitting at a desk all day may actually be beneficial for our brains.
Scientists believe this is because office-based work is more mentally challenging and can therefore protect against cognitive decline.
Researchers from the University of Cambridge tested the mental abilities of 8,500 working adults over a 12-year period.
They found that participants who worked in an office and had a desk-based job performed better at cognitive tests regardless of their education.
The study also found that those who worked in an office environment throughout the 12 years were more likely to have cognitive test scores in the top 10 percent.
But those in manual work were three times more likely to have poor cognition.

The District of Columbia is a monument to the mind rotting nature of bureaucratic office work. It’s a monster that devours civilization.
Said nobody - but this person - ever.
To quote the immortal Lily von Schtupp, BOOL-SHEET.
More elitist horse crap. Office people smart, field/production people dumb.
Majority of people working from home do not do as good as in a office. Too many distractions and it take extreme discipline.
People work harder when they are work clothes versus t shirt and gym pants.
Studies are all proving this.
The work from home is going to be found out to be a big dud in future years.
Ditch diggers better clean up and get professional jobs before they lose their edge.
“More elitist horse crap. Office people smart, field/production people dumb.”
That is not what this study is saying. Did you even read it?
Am not buying what they’re selling.
I do manual work about the grounds on weekends away from my weekday desk job.
Government offices must be different because I can feel my brain turning to mush the minute I walk into one.
You’ll notice that the authors of the study have desk jobs
“working from home is just fine”

The "study" is not about productivity. It's about "good for the mind". Two very different things.
I read enough.
Non-stop porn is good for the mind? In that case working from home is a government job.
Being a pipefitter is quite physical but I guarantee they use their mind to figure out problems every minute of the day. They sleep solving problems. They make up problems just so they can solve them.
"Effin' A!"
So if you do manual labor, you live a long time because of the exercise but you go senile...
vs.
...if you do office work, your mind is very sharp when you drop dead of a coronary at age 56 from sitting on your ass for your whole life.
Great choice.
Worked my way through college doing manual labor - and yes, I did my best to forget what the work day was like when it was over. (But I did remember enough of it to realize college was a breeze in comparison).
