Years ago when I hiked the mountains of northern New Mexico, I would see them on the rocks sunning themselves. They weren’t terribly afraid of humans and if not careful would investigate your day pack for food. If they smelled it, their sharp teeth would go right through the fabric. I remember having to shoo them away at lunch time and was sure not to take a nap in the sun there!
