yeah 44,000 sounds like a rounding error with how far these things usually pass us.
wow

Sure, but it's only moving about 5.5 miles per second. :^)

It’s only traveling in one direction.

About 150 feet in diameter at 18,000 mph?
44k miles is incredible close.
That would be capable of cataclysmic destruction in a populated region.

It’s travelling in an orbit, which occasionally nearly intersects with Earth’s orbit.

At 8 miles per second I'm going with "Zoom by" - outside of our atmosphere (44,000+ miles) there would be no smoke or sound.
I'll try to remember to say hello on 7/25 ...
Hope their calculations are correct! ;-)

It's in an orbit, which means it never remains in a single direction of travel. Any further comments should be directed to the editor and reporter responsible for the story.

The asteroid was small in astronomical terms just a 150 feet (45.7 m) across. Traveling at around 8 miles per second (12.8 kps) the force of the asteroid impact on the ground was tremendous... Meteor Crater is 3900 feet (1200m) across...formed in an explosion estimated to be equal to 10 million tons of TNT. Meteor Crater Arizona Author: James Tobin
