FLINT, MI -- City leaders in Flint pleaded with residents to end the violence after a rash of weekend shootings left 12 people injured, including six at a popup party in a parking lot.
Flanked by police, clergy, and Flint City Council Vice President Maurice Davis, Mayor Sheldon Neeley said police were on site Saturday night in the Hallwood Plaza near the intersection of Clio and Pierson roads.
Thats where shots were fired by people in a crowd of approximately 3,000.
Six people were shot, with all the victims listed in good condition at a local hospital. Information was not immediately available from police on the six additional shooting victims that were injured elsewhere in the city.
These popup parties have been a nuisance inside the city of Flint, Neeley said.
Organizers with of the event had been previously told they could not hold the gathering at the Flat Lot or the Rutherford parking ramp in downtown Flint or the Hallwood Plaza, Flint Police Chief Phil Hart said.
Neeley pointed out similar events have been shut down the last three weeks, with no permitting allowed for crowds of more than 100 people outdoors due to a state executive order meant to try and reduce the spread of COVID-19.
