A Florida teenager is accused of being behind the Twitter hack earlier this month that resulted in several prominent accounts posting messages as part of an apparent bitcoin scam.

Local NBC affiliate WFLA reported Friday that Hillsborough State Attorney Andrew Warren filed 30 felony charges against the 17-year-old for “scamming people across America” regarding the hacking incident.

"We appreciate the swift actions of law enforcement in this investigation and will continue to cooperate as the case progresses," Twitter said in a statement Friday.

The hack, which took place July 15, affected a number of prominent Twitter accounts, including those for former President Obama, former Vice President Joe Biden, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and Tesla CEO Elon Musk, among others.

Twitter said that the hacker obtained employee credentials, allowing them to target 130 accounts, tweeting from 45, accessing direct messages inboxes of 36 and downloading data from seven accounts.

The FBI previously announced it was launching an investigation into the hack earlier this month.

My guess is he did some kind of social engineering and fooled them into handing them over.

Yes, people can be that stupid.

This case gets arrests in under 10 days but we’re STILL waiting for even one arrest on the whole Obamagate/treason mess. Whoever this DA is, let’s get him to Washington.

“Not sure if that’s really hacking”

Yeah, if you had hacked into Twitter, you wouldn’t need to get credentials. THis was more likely social engineering of some sort - phishing, pretending to be doing a security/other check, etc.

It’s easy to find examples of ”they,” “them,” and “their” used as singular pronouns. Linguists call this usage “the singular (or epicene) they”:

If a driver is stopped for speeding, they will be asked to produce their license.
Be good to your neighbor, and they will be good to you.
Each student will be assigned a desk when they register.

And this individual then did what with the information in these high profile accounts’ inboxes and files?

If it was hacking, he hacked into a twitter employee’s pc and found their password list. Or maybe he just tried PASSWORD. Is John Podesta working for twitter by chance?
