Dear FRiends,
I am very interested in your thoughts on how a Democrat win might affect restaurant owners, particularly in the "small chain" category, say, under 100 employees. Expenses, costs, labor, food, hiring, training, payroll, health/fire/labor codes...
It has been a wild struggle but I am wondering if it is going to be an "out of the frying pan, into the fire" situation.
There is so much knowledge, depth of thought, and camaraderie here I thought it would be OK to ask for help trying to map out the future. If you could look into your proverbial crystal ball...

Thank you for your thoughts and ideas!

If the left wins all their elections, don’t mention those words to any of them as they are all foreign to them. Don’t have a clue...
No, these are Democrats, its vegan stew and soy milk.
One thing missed above, the Dem’s are promising a lot of “equal pay” legislation, putting the burdens on the business to prove the basis for any discrepancy in pay involving a protected class (basically everyone but white males.) This gives the protected classes a lot of leverage, fighting back will cost more than the demanded pay increases. Think two employees, one hard working, one lazy. You give the hard worker a raise as a result. The lazy one challenges getting lower pay, you now have to prove why to the satisfaction of the lazy one if that employee is of a protected class. Think equality of outcome, not equality of opportunity.
Learn to cook.
Affordable restaurants will be gone.
The minimum wage rage has already made a huge impact on the restaurants in Seattle. If the leftists don’t listen to their comrades who own restaurants, the industry will be gone.
If Biden steals the election, a few months later we will have President Kamala Harris. Will beef be outlawed? She’s a Hindu. Can McDonald’s or Wendy’s survive if they can no longer sell hamburgers?
In short, you’re phooked!
or restaurants will only be available to senior party faithful and will be controlled by the government. For the rest of us, we will get ration cards and buy from a government store...
All small businesses will be forked.
Not just food establishments.
Biden wants more illegals, so restaurant owners will be overjoyed.
we have a front seat on what’s happening in NYC, living 15-20 miles away in Bergen County NJ. The idea of 100 employees or less is unrealistic-—MOST restaurants in NY have WAY less employees, and the smaller the restaurant the harder hit they were. While I haven’t been in the City since last March JUST BEFORE the lockdown and all the restrictions were imposed, I can’t wait to get in and do a tour , to see for myself. It will be much easier that way to get an intuitive grasp of the situation, and determine whether it “feels” as bad as it now seems, because factoring in everything and knowing the talents of the Mayor to take absolutely the WORST course of action/inaction, the one that damages the most people, I see no hope. There are still too many cross-currents working against the city right now, with no sign of anything improving-—the bigger restaurateurs have pretty much decided that there is now NO reason to even try to do business here anymore, since it was nearly insupportable even in the best of times, counting on hype and the ruling zeitgeist of trendiness to see it through and make it profitable. It’s hard to believe but I think NYC will start to take on the complexion of a ghost town very soon. Books will be written about this unprecedented phenomenon. Interestingly , that OTHER notorious ghost town called Detroit, held up pretty well under both the Covid madness and the Floyd violence virus. Decent leadership with a respectful approach to law enforcement and a population that will take measures to prevent it from slipping and plunging back into the horrible old days is what it needed and got. It’s slowly but surely clawing its way back to livability and “re-development”.
At this point, subtleties don’t matter. We’re past that.
We have crazy leftist racists demanding that people give up their houses - because they’re white. We have a MSM that ignored the execution of a 5 year old child. We have a nation in which there are many who could care less that our own FBI and CIA tried to orchestrate a coup. We have openly Marxist Congressional office holders. We, and much of the world was very, very likely just victimized by an infectious agent that was the product of inappropriate research in Communist China - some of which was paid for by US taxpayer dollars (i.e. NIH grants).
We have looting in our largest major cities and no consequences for the looters -with to date only scattered exceptions. We have mobs toppling statues of American historical figures - including today George Washington.
This post could go on and on, but the point is clear. We have to fight, and fight very, very hard to keep America. It’s well beyond ‘give an inch and they’ll take a mile’. We given them miles, and now they want the entire nation.
Fight, or lose everything.
“I can cook better food at home and I know whats in it.”
Same here, but as any wife or girlfriend will tell you, food always tastes better with a restaurant wrapped around it.
;^)
Good for you living on a farm, or talented gardener you may be living in a house with some property. NOT so the vast majority of the populace of the USA.
There are millions of people in this country stuck with a grocery store, and the prices for what they eat dictate what they eat.
The Democrats take power, they will “rule”. Regulations will abound, there will be fines, fees, and taxes on everything. Your gardening at home will be taxed by the size of your garden. Your property taxes will rise. The cost to live will be above, and beyond onerous under Democrat “rule”.
It may be cheaper, but “cheaper” is relative. The Democrats will make it so costly for you to “eat at home” from your garden you won’t believe it.
Theyll make them continue outdoor dining in the snow
Agree with all of your answers.
Gee....it’s as if they’re specifically targeting this segment of business....
Aren’t (these smaller, not chain) restaurants one of the bigger segments of small business?
Totally decimated, if Dems win.
Trump knows this and has stressed how important it is, for middle class and our entire economy, for these restaurants to succeed/reopen.
Restaurant workers will get a tax break for validated spitting into people’s drinks and food...
OTOH, a guy can always cook dinner for his wife AND do the clean up afterwards.
And it doesn’t really count if he keeps asking for advice and where to find things.
That should be done ahead of time so that he can just go ahead and do it.
That’s far more meaningful than just paying money to have someone else do it. It takes forethought, work, and commitment.
I’d feel pretty special if my husband told me to just kick back with a drink while he did the entire shebang.
At least in big cities like NY, with already astronomical rents and the usual bustling populations always ready to go out at night and “partake”, UP TILL NOW, just about everything you enumerated almost seems like a boutique issue at this point. In NY people simply want to GET OUT-—they don’t feel safe in the slightest, anything can erupt anywhere, and WILL, and the city has less and less to offer ANYONE ON ANY LEVEL> You cannot do what the Governor and Mayor have done to that city, pulled that kind of major “stunt” just for political effect, and expect the city to bounce back. It might take 5 years, and it will take the most carefully engineered plan of fnancial and physical rehab imaginable. I am surprised the people of NYC haven’t already taken drastic measures of their own, but apparently the anarchists and looters have pre-empted them. What a shame.
I think you too kind. Dems good for those that dream of paradise like Venezuela and cuba
Nevertheless, grocery store food is SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper than eating out at a restaurant.
And there's often food co-ops, farmers markets, etc.
City folks could also have chosen to move out into the country and had those resources, but they didn't.
They can't tax it if they don't know I'm growing it. There are ways to grow food that are not so obvious, and there's food to eat in the wild that is available.
