Pepperoni Shortage Strikes Small Pizza Places Across the US: Report
Fox News ^ | 8/16 | Michael Hollan

Various shortages have struck during the coronavirus pandemic, ranging from toilet paper (which was caused by panic buying during the early days), coins, and even aluminum cans. Now, pepperoni has apparently fallen victim to the pandemic.

Pizza shops across the United States say they’re paying higher prices for the popular topping and have noticed that the supply has become tighter, Bloomberg reports. Restaurants from New York to South Dakota have reportedly seen a significant increase in price, with the cost nearly doubling in some areas.

According to the news outlet, other meat products saw temporary price increases during the pandemic. While ground beef became more expensive earlier in the year, the price has reportedly started to drop. Pepperoni, on the other hand, continues to be expensive.

Cool!

Hope other ham products have fallen in price.
Lots of them are worthy substitutes.

I’m on a low salt diet now so pepperoni is a nono. I dodged a good-sized bullet.

OH NOES! Seriously, though, there are a lot of other cuts of Italian ham and sausage product you can top your pie with if you really need to scratch that itch. And I’m not such a topping snob that I won’t go for one with the right veggies on it. 75% of the quality is in the sauce, the dough, and the means of baking, anyway (try wood-smoked and/or hearth baked.)

I make my own pizza and use ham, onions, mushrooms, sometimes pineapple because my wife likes it. I never use pepperoni. Too greasy for me.

” there are a lot of other cuts of Italian ham and sausage product you can top your pie with “
Right?

And, IMO, even non-Italian products are excellent.

Onions are a great, and much unappreciated, pizza condiment.

I’m one of the few people I know who doesn’t like pepperoni, so I have no idea how much it costs.

However, pork chops and most other cuts of pork have had good sale prices lately.

One exception is Jimmy Dean roll sausage (top-rated brand) which I was getting on sale for $3/lb, but now goes on sale for $3.5/lb.

Ham ain’t cheap. I’m seeing about the same prices on packaged “deli” ham, but ham steaks, cubed ham, and half or whole hams are pretty expensive right now. I’m counting on producers seeing the high prices which should be an inducement to increase supply. But I read an article recently that said adhering to the pandemic protocols is slowing down the production process.

It appears things won’t return to normal until either a vaccine becomes available or the US develops a herd immunity. I’m hoping for the former.

“Onions are a great, and much unappreciated, pizza condiment.”

Raw onions cooked on top of a pizza? No thanks. Now caramelized onions might be a different story. Unfortunately whenever I ordered onions on pizza, raw onions were put on and were harsh.

Same thing as mushrooms. First of all, using canned mushrooms is a sin. Raw sliced shrooms aren’t much better. Sauteed mushrooms, on the other hand...

Definately carmelized!

As a condiment, onions are very much like mushrooms.

Re-read your reply.

So much wisdom, I wish every pizza-maker would read it.

Hope they don’t use that fake halal crap and pass it off as real pepperoni like in Singapore, the UK and the Middle East . Shiite is nasty.

Yes. Fire and Brimstone. Mass hysteria Dogs and cats living together. Ham and pineapple as pizza toppings. We’re doomed.

I agree about onions being great on pizzas. But I always like pepperoni topping the veggies. Even a generous amount of parsley is good on pizza if pepperoni is on top to flavor it. I tear the pepperoni slices up to make them go further and to blend in better with the other toppings. Since the outer edge of the crust gets done fastest, I add more moisture via sauce, cheese, veggies, and pepperoni to the outer edge to the extent some runs off onto the seasoned pan and still cooks up nice.

Definately the pepperoni has to be top.
Other hams than pepperoni can be as useful though.
