Ive looked into that in some detail. And from what I could tell, Einstein was an agnostic and not an atheist. But Im not sure. His comments on the subject were usually rather cryptic.
Einstein: For an Atheist he did seem to mention God quite often. Many physicists, including Max Planck, became believers (in a general sense) or had their faith strengthened as a result of their work. Cannot fathom atheistic scientists. How can one perceive order, in mathematical terms, or reality resulting from consciousness, without recognizing the mathematician and consciousness behind it all?
An atheist who said God does not play dice with the universe.
Then went on to discover quantum mechanics where God does nothing but dice with every elemental particle!
