I have never heard of this guy until recently. He appeared out of the blue. What gives?

This guy is/was one of the leaders of what is called the "Alt-Right". He is a white separatist, but not a white supremacist. He doesn't believe white people are better than other races, just that it would be better for people to self-segregate by race.

For a while he was allowed on all of the liberal talk shows, etc. because the alt-right was getting lots of traction on YouTube, but then I believe he attended Charlottesville and was black listed.

I believe he still has a YouTube channel or is on BitChute or other alternatives. He has been disowned by much of the alt-right because they believe he is just a grifter making money off regurgitating alt-right talking points.

I believe he is also gay which turns off some on the alt-right who are pro-western-European-heritage and don't cotton to gays.
