Would it have helped if he had watched with more skill?
My 76 year old wife shooed a black bear off our deck this afternoon with a soup ladle and pot lid.
The bear fled at the noise.
The bugger had stripped a cherry tree in our yard yesterday and broke a few branches in the process.
If he keeps this up, we’ll deal with him. I’ve only had to do that once in the last 18 years. We live next to actual wilderness and bears are mostly easy to run off.
I hope this one is like the rest; I hate dead bears.

“Her nine-year-old son watched horrifically”...good old Daily Mail...always the worst writing. I suspect he was actually horrified.
If bears could talk, they might say, “Y’all been shooting and killing us for 200 years, then ya turn us into rugs and decorations. Leave us alone”.
“Canadian woman, 44, is mauled to death by a black bear while on phone to her father outside family cabin while her nine-year-old son watched from inside...”
Well if the bear doesn’t kill you at least the hyperbole will.

Black bears are like polar bears, they hunt their prey.
Do we need to look, or can we guess?
A woman’s life is lost, and her little boy will always remember what he saw. A tragedy all around. Another reminder that black bears do sometimes kill people.

Sad. But complacency may have been contibuting factor. Bears were known to frequent the site.....cellphone distraction may have been involved in this tragedy also. Another life sorrowfully lost.
