I have cast iron pot and pans. Cast iron is easy to clean.

That’s a good system but backpackers can’t carry that much gear; I have a small collapsible rubber basin that barely fits a mess kit plate in it...

I always say there’s a big difference between dirt and germs.
The five second rule becomes two minutes when you’re camping.

Boil water in the biggest pot with a little liquid soap — which should be applied to the outside— the soot will wipe
right off.
Use the boiling soapy water to clean the other pots and pans.
For a dutch Oven: Pliers and a green pine cone with hot water, not soapy, obviously

Wow, neat trick.
A lot of places you are probably dealing with sand and not dirt though. Scouring.

Clean dirt is called soil.

Old joke: Bring a dog with you named “Soap ‘n’ Water”, so when people ask if the pots and dishes are clean, you can say, “As clean as Soap ‘n’ Water can make them.”

Sand and the river.
Learned it from reading Rober Ruark’s “The Old Man and The Boy”.

I recognize that pot. How many of youall been to a Cajun crawfish boil for 50?
To: Hootowl99
Sure, Ive used big pots like that for mud bugs (not Cajun, Lemon and dill instead), booyah, and flashover fishboils to entertain people from out of state when at home but how often are you going to bring that kind of kettle to cook at a campsite for 50+ of your best friends?
Right.
If youre going camping with the family youre probably hauling in via vehicle or trailer then you can bring the cast iron. That takes even less effort to clean. You just put it on/under wood and start the whole pile on fire. There, its clean.
If youre going lighter than that and youre really worried about soot on your enamelware then horsetail (scouring rush) and/or ash works fine.
I dont think Ive ever seen a hiker/packer/scout type ever care how much soot/char is on the outside of a mess kit.
Sort of a handy tip I suppose but one of those thats going to be packed way back in the archives of the memory index.

I only plant my carrots and things in clean dirt that way I can just pull them and eat them without having to wash it first.

Yep... not much gear at all but the important gear. My backpacking days are over now. Age, knee and ankle shut me down. Im good for several mile hikes but not with a backpacking level load out or on rougher or off camber trails. Did a 10 mile day hike in early April but only loaded with water, energy bars, poncho, cordage, down vest and self defense. I will not go that long again.
I truck camp only now so weight is not an issue. Still though, my load out is pretty minimalist compared to what many or perhaps most folks would consider essential. Most of the weight is for a 4gal plastic Jerry can, a canvas chuck bag and a good ice chest mainly loaded with beer, Dr. Pepper and water.
