Herewith, a clarifying thought experiment:
In 2019, one hundred 85 year old men with three co-morbid conditions stood on a football field and did the hula hoop. Within the next three months, 12 of them died.
In 2020, one hundred 85 year old men with three co-morbid conditions were diagnosed with covid. Within the next three months, 12 of them died.
In 2021, one hundred 85 year old men with three co-morbid conditions were given the covid vaccine. Within the next three months, 12 of them died.
How many died from Hula Hoops? Covid? The Covid Vaccine?
Natural causes
2019: there is still a lot left to go in Trump’s first term so the 12 died from anxiety
2020: all 12 had some intersectionality and died of systemic racism
2021: all 12 were finally free to choose compassionate euthanasia
does it matter? does it really bother you that much?
Funniest response on FR in ages!
I prefer a simplified approach. If it were not for the Covid virus, would the deceased still be alive today? If the answer is yes, then it’s a Covid death.
As an analogy, consider an old man with a heart condition. His evil nephew pushes him down a flight of stairs. A healthy man would have survived that attack. But because of his weak heart, the old man dies. I’d say the nephew is at fault here. It’s not a heart-related death.
Regards,
I believe the term for this is excess mortality ("Übersterblichkeit" in German) - and yes: It is the only pertinent variable which should be taken into consideration in these discussions (though I would insist that extra deaths attributable to the alleged countermeasures - e.g., dying from loneliness, increased alcohol consumption, "cabin fever," etc. - be first deducted from the figures).
Regards,
The old man goes down the stairs every day and every day something, anything shakes the stairs. Each day an earthquake, or the neighbor's dance party, or one time it was that monster that has been for years hiding under the bed, something shakes and weakens the stairs. Each day he manages to get down the stairs alive. Then one of those days his son bumps the railing and the stairs collapse, he falls into the basement and dies. The son is distraught, "He went down those stairs every day!" The doctor/ME tries to comfort, "His heart gave out just at that moment." He was dead before he hit the basement. Don't blame yourself." The son is still deeply troubled but tries to accept the consolation.
But just then the government steps in charges the son with murder. Jails him and outlaws staircases nationwide. But it's OK because trillions of dollars are sent out to all the people who are now stuck on the second floor by government edict.
In his prison cell, the son sits, thinking long and hard about his life, about this imaginary castle which he had built up around his mind, with its paper walls and rickety toothpick staircases. At long last, finally he feels at peace, because now he knows the truth. Now he knows what he has been running from all his life. Now he knows that...
"He loved Big Brother."
My ambition is to die at the age of 92, shot by a jealous husband.

Very true and that is certainly how the law would treat that situation. But in placing into perspective the effects of a disease or any other cause of death, it makes sense to consider years of life lost. A very old man dying is still a loss of life, tragic and a loss to all of us for sure, but it is not the same as a young man dying. With the young man, decades of a life are lost and with the old man, only a few. So while not in a moral sense but at least in a statistical sense, the two deaths are very different, and the incessant death count shown on the television news ignores this obvious fact in order to drum up fear and encourage compliance.
In 2019, 2020, 2021:
40 died from heart attack
14 died from cancer
11 died from stroke
6 died from COPD
6 died from influenzas, pneumonia
*add ,COVID here for 2020
6 died from Alzheimers
4 died from Diabetes complications
3 died from kidney disease
3 died from accidents
3 died from sepsis
4 from various causes all at < 1 %)
“When I die, I wanna die in my sleep, just like my grandpa; not screaming in fear like the passengers in his car!”
In all cases the three co-mobid conditions, all indicators of serious and probably long term metabolic problems, were the cause of death. Disease usually strikes those whose ill health creates conditions suitable for the disease to grow.
Look up Terrain Theory of disease. The germ theory is incomplete without also considering the terrain theory.
