Alabama WR DeVonta Smith Wins 2020 Heisman Trophy
Sports Illustrated ^ | 1-5-2021 | Ben Pickman

Alabama wide receiver DeVonta Smith was named the 2020 Heisman Trophy winner on Tuesday night, becoming the first wideout since 1991 to earn the sport's top individual honor.

This season, Smith led the nation in receptions (105), receiving yards (1,641) and receiving touchdowns (20), having most recently taken home the Offensive Most Valuable Player award in Alabama's dominant Rose Bowl win over Notre Dame. The 22-year-old wideout has also had 100 or more receiving yards eight times this season, the most in Crimson Tide history.

“He’s probably one of the most selfless guys I’ve ever had the opportunity to coach,” head coach Nick Saban told Sports Illustrated's Pat Forde. “He’s one of the most popular guys on the team, and one of the people the players look up to because of his attitude.”

For his efforts, he was also previously named the AP Player of the Year.

Mac Jones starred in 2020 as well, throwing for 4,036 yards and 36 touchdowns with only four interceptions, orchestrating an offense that is averaging more than 48 points per game.

Trevor Lawrence, the presumptive No. 1 pick in the upcoming NFL draft, played in just 10 games this season, the fewest of his collegiate career. However, he set a career-high mark in completion percentage (69.2%) as he threw for more than 3,100 yards.

Kyle Trask is coming off the best of his three collegiate seasons, having accumulated more than 4,200 yards and thrown for 43 touchdowns. The Florida quarterback has also scored three rushing touchdowns.

By winning the Heisman, though, Smith joins an exclusive club of receivers to do so. Michigan wide receiver/returner Desmond Howard was the last wideout to win the Heisman Trophy

This was the year to have a dual Heisman, DeVonta and Mac.

"This was the year to have a dual Heisman, DeVonta and Mac."

That crossed my mind too.

Finally some good news to help me deal with all the satanic voices coming the center of a government I use to respect and honored to serve in its defense

Not difficult to see why Bama is so good. 3 in the top 5. Surely, that’s a first. They might be better than LSU was on offense last year. Might.

NON PC comment.

So of the 4 finalists there were 3 white guys and a black.

But more so there was one college player that gave up a #1 NFL draft pick to come back to Bama for his senior year, and excelled. He deserved the trophy.

The Heisman should go to the best college senior, IMHO that was Smith.

I miss the excitement of crowded stadiums. Blessings to those athletes making it through this madness.

3 in the top 5. Surely, that’s a first.

1946: Army (1, 4, 5) – Won national title Davis finally won his Heisman, while Blanchard took fourth and quarterback Arnie Tucker took fifth. It stands as the only time three teammates placed in the top five of the Heisman vote.

Certainly, it’s his best offense ever. Best team? Very difficult to say.

This year certainly has favored offense. The rules have made it almost impossible to legally tackle a ball-carrier. Pass interference is called very tightly. It looks like, contrary to conventional wisdom, COVID-19 protocols limiting practice hurt defense more than offense. I’m curious to see if the trend continues ... assuming there is football in the coming year.

At one time, it was a given that a senior would win the Heisman Trophy. I don’t know if that was ever an official rule or not.

More politically incorrect crap.

In 9 years, Heisman winners:
2010- Cam Newton
2011- Robert Griffin (the 3rd 🙃)
2013- Jameis Winston (look at his off field exploits)
2016- Lamar the Jackson
2018- Kyler Murray

Remember, last season was the year of the (b)lack quarterback. How many of the above are even any decent this year? Maybe one.
