I was teaching school in 1972 and moved my family to Alabama. I gave strong thought o doing the Nanny thing. As a male with a Masters degree, I had a couple of good options to earn 15,000 annual. Teaching Fairfax, VA only paid 10,000 for a Masters degreed teacher.

I graduated in 1979 with a chemical engineering degree with a first professional salary of $16k a year. 18 months later, I was at $40k after graduating out of the probationary period.

At about 24 months, the price of oil collapsed sent oil companies and chemical companies into a tailspin and ended up with a salary freeze for several years. Of course, the Corp. management was getting hefty bonuses for cutting costs and increasing profit at the same time.
