I am surprised the new Ham equipment is so limited on frequencies. The old stuff could listen to lots of stuff. It is sad that world news has abandoned radio. I guess I have to dust off the scanner and see what is out there. I used to be able to get Baton Rouge TV form 1300 miles away but not Denver which was 50 miles away. The government destroyed AM TV when it forced everything digital.
You are correct, the old stuff did not have so many FCC frequency restrictions, get an old r390a and pump the if into a computer

No I would not talk to other non licensed people on the Ham bands, but I would talk to them on CB channels or GMRS/FRS radios.

Because 99.99% of all licensed Hams in the world are in a database that we can all verify immediately is a legitimate call, AS LONG AS WE HAVE AN INTERNET CONNECTION. I’ve not been a Ham but a few years so I don’t know how they verified back in the day. Probably the had a communication then later determined the person was not licensed and struck it from the log book made a note not to respond tho that call again and broadcast the bogus call to all others.

Icom, Yeasu, are made in Japan and very good equipment. I don’t think there are any radio manufacturers in the US anymore

One would add, interest in equipment emphatically NOT made in China, even if it costs more.
Depends on the band and also sunspot activity. When the sun is active, you can get a signal half way around the world.
