The reason American bars have loud horrible music is studies show people having conversations drink LESS - cutting into profits.

Similar to restaurants happy with the 'no smoking' rules of the 80's because smoker tables don't turn over as fast...

And last, in the 60's some grocery stores came up with the idea of playing offensive music to stop lingering. It was 'build larger stores or move the people out quicker'... luckily that one didn't last.

Oddly, the one little tavern that is still open around here has a curtain, they used to secure the jukebox when dinner is served.
