Most males in breeding combat tend to size each other up before committing themselves. If the non pictured male was “much larger”, I wonder if he simply couldn’t get away from the older male.

Elephants don’t have a breeding season. The older bull was probably in musth (think testosterone on steroids with irritability at the nth degree). A cow in estrus doesn’t have to be nearby for a bull in musth to become enraged by anything in his path. Poor youngster, 6 or 7 isn’t even a teenager in elephant years. He hadn’t even been pushed out of his breeding herd yet. Both younger and smaller bulls usually won’t challenge a bigger bull when his raging hormones are in charge.
I’ve seen a cow push over a sub-adult elephant because they both wanted the same foliage to munch on. It’s not always about breeding.
