Once upon a time, flu was generally judged by the symptoms. It’s a middle to lower respiratory tract infection, whereas colds (rhinovirus) are an upper respiratory tract infection. In other words, tests for the flu virus were rarely done.
I’d suspect that a lot of our “Covid dead” actually died of the flu. But they don’t test for that, and they do test for Covid...so all this means is that the person who tested positive has ben exposed to it, may have had it, and then contracted the flu and actually died of that. But there now no testing for the flu.
