Poor guy...end of his fabulous career, for sure. Hope medically he comes out of this OK, but he’ll be living a whole different kind of life...maybe, with luck, even better.

Accidents do happen.

No, they do not just, "Happen".

Traffic collisions almost always caused by neglect, inattention, excessive speed, DUI, following too close, etc.

Broken? OK, but more like shattered.

“Then why were there no skid marks?”

Since when is too fast going to cause skids marks? Duh.

Because people going to fast hit the breaks when they realize they are going to fast to stay on the road. They try to slow down. It’s accident reconstruction 101. No skid marks are almost always an indication of driver inattention, falling asleep or intoxication. Duh.

Your dad was right. I hate supermarket parking lots in particular.

Those places are just itching to have some distracted person plow into you.

I always get jumpy backing out in that place, because no matter how hard I look and crane my head, I always have this gut feeling someone is in my EXACT blind spot, pulling out in exactly a mirrored way, and neither of us see each other.

LOL. I guess this is a “first world problem”...:)

Or having an asteroid come thought the sunroof and hit ya in the head or having a moose run out in front of you. Those are accurately described as “Accidents”.

Of course these are obviously the rare exceptions.

Car he was driving has a black box... ALL will be revealed.

Interesting. To the fact of there being a black box and the legality of it being made public.

All the new road iron has “trigger event” data logging of vehicle performance (event data recorders (EDRs) and the driver’s input to the controls.

Thanks for the clarification. Strange, just a random accident. If he was under the influence I think we would have heard about that by now.

YVW.

The Sheriffs didn't do either a drug or alcohol test because they said he was lucid and there was no alcohol or drugs present in the car. They said they would need a warrant to do a drug test. (ya right!)

IOW, they're giving him a pass.

No skid marks are almost always an indication of driver inattention, falling asleep or intoxication.

Also no skid marks if you hit the gas instead of the brakes.

The fact that his SUV sheared an 8" tree trunk says a lot about the speed at the time of impact.

Here's a photo showing the distance traveled from the time he crossed the center island to where his SUV came to rest. The LASD didn't give an exact measurement for the distance traveled, but did say it was several hundred feet.

Here's the tree trunk that was sheared off.

good grief... today’s cars have what’s known as “anti lock” brakes... they have a tendency to prevent wheel lock and skid marks...

people really need to educate themselves and stop assuming that lack of skid marks indicates lack of braking...

Yep. Appears cover for sponsors and wouldn’t be surprised they’ll wait 6-9 months to get this off front page.

It won't reveal what he was doing immediately prior to loss of control (i.e. texting). That will have to come from the phone or phone company records. And if he was just reading....no record.

Next generation might include a black-box camera pointed at driver. Not acceptable to me, although I don't drive distracted.

and today’s vehicles also have “blue tooth” connectabilty for hands free device operation while driving...

all information is available via the obd2 port that is accessible by a laptop computer...

this includes speed and braking attempts at point of impact...
