He actually played a Japanese guy, and I believe there's a brief video on the current Blu-rays and DVDs that explain how "wrong" it was.
It is actually a rather offensive caricature. I don't know why they decided to go with Rooney as a Japanese guy saying "Mis Go-Right-ree". It was a dated stereotype even then. But I don't lose any sleep over it.

How about Edward G. Robinson playing Chinese characters in East is West and The Hatchet Man? I saw The Hatchet Man on AMC just a few months ago.
