At the time it was Ford, then Carter, and no, no one was talking about it in the US, that I can remember. It was reported real-time, as I noted, but most with people wondering what was going on. But you are probably right in that the genocide wasn’t known until Vietnam invaded, which was just as Iran was being ‘liberated’ from the Shah.
As it is, it still has NEVER been talked about as a failure of Socialism...rather just some insane government. But never forget, it was committed by Cambodians against other Cambodians...something to keep in mind here.
