Also, the exchange with the employee, as described by Rachel, sounds like it was embellished, at the very least (more likely made up entirely).

I doubt the employees can outdo the local homeless.

I’m sure it was, at least, embellished.

I went into Walmart a year or two ago to buy a $30 Timex watch. They made me pay for it at the jewelry counter before continuing my shopping in the rest of the store.
Somehow, I've managed to move on.

Back when they had ammo, you had to pay for it at the Sporting Goods counter.
If you buy an SD card, you have to pay for it at the electronics counter.

Have you ever taken a look at the shelves and area around aerosol paints? People open them up and spray them to get a sample of the actual color.

"Around 2010, I ended up in the Virginia region (near Arlington) and had to stop at a Wal-Mart. As I purchased my stuff and got to the door to exit....they (Wal-Mart security) stopped me and wanted to see my receipt and the goods in the bag." They do it at my Walmart on occasion.....
I tell them no and keep walking.......
Once I bought it I own it......No warrant, no peekee...
At Sam's Club, I do allow it since I signed the membership in which I agreed.....

Yep. The Home Depot where I worked even provided boards attached to the shelves for people to test the paint.
Did that help? NO. They'd paint shelves, ladders, fire extenguishers, floor...
I think the system was set up so one couldn't purchase spray paint without showing an ID.

I bet not only do they (a certain segment of that population) steal more they also scam more with their friends who might happen to work in retail to defraud stores more.
To: real saxophonist
Should have made them show IQ.
To: pepsionice
The one by me in Maryland does the same thing if you have an item that’s not in a bag.
If I’m going to go through the trouble of stealing something, it’s not going to be a case of Mountain Dew.
I walk right past them and wish them a nice day. The 4th Amendment makes what they are doing illegal.
They are demanding to search my property. The moment money changed hands at the register, the items became legally my property and they have no right to make me prove it.
The onus is on them to prove that it is not my property and under the 5th Amendment, I don’t have to self-incriminate.

“...security measures around beauty products for people of color.”
Beauty products for all ‘people of color’? or perhaps beauty products for people of one color in particular? Every one knows the answer and everyone knows the reason. But it can’t be said out loud.

I was at Walmart just a few weeks ago and they made me pay for the printer ink I wanted immediately. I didn’t realize I could have cried about it and gone on tv or demand an apology. I did think it was strange but paid it and continued shipping.
