I wonder if where the cold fusion experiment is located affects the result. If you are located in an environment like Utah or Nevada perhaps you have a higher back ground level of radiation from the local rock formations that skews the result. If you are located in some place like Ames Iowa, or London or Paris not so much. Just a thought.

There’s at least one theory that proposes cosmic rays as the trigger. That would fit your scenario.
