TECH PING: This is the second time that the update to Windows 10 has wiped out my passwords in BRAVE. What is going on?? Help? I cannot stop the updates and feel very trapped.

Go to your backup, and restore the following file:
Windows path: C:\Users\ [YourUserName]\AppData\Local\BraveSoftware\Brave-Browser\User Data\Default
Obviously, substitute your computer username for [YourUserName] in the above path. You should find the Brave password store there. Once you’ve restored it from the backup, you can go into the Brave options and export the passwords to a .csv you can copy to a flash drive.

Use a paper notebook.
You’re welcome.
Now how do I get Brave to delete credit card numbers and other private data that I am not even aware it is storing?

Go to your network settings and set your current network as “METERED”. Windows 10 will not update over metered networks. The only draw back I have is with outlook, you will have to click send/receive as it will not automatically update inboxes over Metered networks.

Yes, MS will, if they consider it an “important” update. Happened to me.

Every time there is an update to your operating system, there is a risk that applications currently installed will have a failure due to a change in shared library code on which they depend. I see unstable behavior on my Windows machines when the corporate IT staff have pushed updates that partially install while other parts "need a reboot" to complete. Patches are usually issued as a "suite" of tested items that need to be applied as a set. On Android, it is typical to see re-issues of applications after an OS patch. Ditto on IOS platforms e.g. iPad where a system update necessitates fixes to applications to work correctly.
On the topic of passwords: find a password manager e.g. KeePass or Dashlane that secure the passwords by application. I have to maintain a large number of passwords that must be unusually complex to meet the imposed standards. KeePass keeps them encrypted in a local file that can be backed up to a thumb drive. Dashlane is cloud oriented and maintains an encrypted copy.
The encrypted passwords in my environment are on top of session encryption using PKI, CAC and other related technologies. Browsers tend to keep password information in cookie files and those get wiped on a cache clear and sometimes as part of a browser update that changes how the cookies are stored and retrieved. You need to more robust solution. KeePass is a pretty simple option.

“I am for the first time, seriously considering the change.”
Get an old laptop and install Linux Mint. Just play with it for a while. I think you will find that it works fine and then maybe you would be comfortable starting to transition over.
I use a password manager for the official record of my passwords, but for day to day use I will let them stick in Brave as well. But, I use may manager to generate new passwords, so they are always in there first

I can’t help you with your Brave issue, but I would recommend using a password manager rather than save the passwords in a browser. Look at Lastpass, or Bitwarden. You can have unique, long and/or complex passwords for each site or service, and all you have to remember is your master password. (Use 2FA as well for greater security.)
