I would think that our bodies have some sense of time; not clock time, but cycles of time involving hunger, thirst, activity, and sleep.

About 15 years ago, I was involved in an accident and had a concussion. I was able to answer all of the medics questions except the ones about time, which reinforced for me that clock time and calendar time are somewhat artificial.

Circadian rhythm.

According to child sleep expert Dr. Ferber, our natural cycle is closer to 25 hours, not 24.

So we get offset after a while.
