Naw... so far as I know, the Left doesn't even call themselves "liberals" these days, and there's nothing traditionally liberal about them.

What they are, and always have been is Democrats, the same people who ruled over Washington, DC, before 1861 and then rebelled against it when voted out of power.
Today, whenever they can rule oppressively, they do, whenever voted out of power they "resist" and rebel endlessly, implying we'll only ever see peace again when they are once-again in full authority over us.

It's what Democrats have always been, and will always be, if they're allowed to.

In 1860 they were Democrats, allied to Southern slavers to rule over Washington, DC, since the election of 1800.
Thrown out of power in 1860 by rural Republican voters, Southern Democrats declared secession & war against the United States.
Their Northern Big-City Democrat allies either supported the slavers or opposed them only half-heartedly, i.e., George McClellan.

After the Civil War, Democrats North & South quickly reunited and have been waging some form of warfare against the United States ever since.

But tariffs were lowered to 13% in 1857 and remained there until Southern Democrats seceded and walked out of Congress in 1861.

And Congress did allow slavery in the territories.

"In the Compromise of 1850, it was decided that New Mexico Territory would be able to choose its own stance on slavery by popular sovereignty.
In 1859, New Mexico passed the Act for the Protection of Slave Property. "

Other western territories like Oklahoma, Utah & Colorado also allowed slavery until Congress outlawed it, during the Civil War.
