NASA Wallops Rocket Launch Now Set For Tuesday Night
WBZ ^ | Zack Green

Posted on 05/11/2021 8:40:32 AM PDT by BenLurkin

The Sunday and Monday launches were postponed due to “upper level winds not being within the limits for a safe launch.” The original launch was planned for last Friday, but has been moved each night due to the weather.

The goal of the mission is to study how energy and momentum is transported between regions of space that are connected magnetically.

This study will help scientists better understand things like Auroras and how they are formed and their movement from place to place.

Does anybody remember the movie Marooned (1969)?

Astronaut David Janssen had to take off within the calm eye of a hurricane to reach the three suffocating astronauts stuck in orbit.

The ARIA aircraft covered some shots from Wallops back in the ‘70s, but then they were intentionally launching into thunderstorms. The ARIA crew knew it was going to be a bumpy ride.

Wallops Island is America's first space port.

"The first research rocket launched from Wallops Island was Tiamat on July 4, 1945. Since 1945, NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility has launched more than 15,000 rockets from Wallops Island for science studies, technology development, and as targets for the U.S. military."

I’m about 70 miles NW of there on the other side of the Chesapeake Bay, can see launches from there often. Mostly sounding rockets but a few supply launches to the Space Station.

Interesting post civil war back trail on just how Wallops Island, privately owned land, was acquired post 1870. Back taxes to the “State” imposed by Union generals who administered Virginia’s “reconstruction”. Came across it in the description of how a facility of this size came to be installed in a “wildlife refuge”, eventually.

Quite similar to Merritt Island— which was entirely privately owned for decades, engaged in citrus farming (excellent citrus, very large navel oranges for export). The “acquisition” of the land for the Canaveral Space station (formerly Kennedy, renamed back to Canaveral)— took the form of a very long federal lease of private grove land, and the eventual financial hardship causing conversion to the rest as a “wildlife refuge”.

A friend of mine’s Grandfather was once a mayor of Merritt Island. I’ll have to ask if he was the one who ‘arranged’ that. He DID arrange for a road to go around his house, because Grandma didn’t like the road she had to use.

One of the major families (among many others historically before that— talking 1880’s) son, was Speaker of the House of the State of Florida for many years. Republican, true conservative. His district carved away by demonrats am recollecting. Citrus farmer, really great conservative.

NASA has it’s good and it’s bad. Never forget that Obi-won-Kenyobi gave NASA it’s new “mission” to assist the spread of “Islam” and tolerance to it— to the world (and all the crap that entailed trying to give away space tech to muzzies).

Patrick AFB is no longer— it is the HQ for the U.S. Space Force (thank you Mr. Trump) and is Patrick Space Port. Taking over a lot of USAF functions country wide. And, a good thing, too— the new “woke” AF is a joke.

I can recognize Mystery Science Theater but cannot tell which episode. Also difficult because I never even saw one episode.
