The FBI was somewhat overzealous and extra-legal in their pursuit of information on the Weather Underground. They had good intel on them, but couldn’t put together a case based on admissible evidence.
Deep Throat was sentenced to prison for what he did to the Weather Underground (but never served a day).
Meanwhile James Comeystain and other agents made up a witchhunt and lied on FISA court documents and not even a slap on the wrist.
