China elephants: Herd on mammoth 500km trek reaches Kunming
BBC ^ | 3 June 2021 | BBC

A herd of elephants that packed its trunks for an unexpected 500km (300 mile) trek has arrived at a Chinese city where millions of people live.

The 15 elephants have been hoovering up crops and poking their noses through doors on the march from the south of Yunnan province to its capital Kunming.

A big effort - with tonnes of food - is under way to try and keep them safe.

It is unclear why they left their habitat to embark on the journey, which has captivated residents and experts.

Some have suggested an inexperienced leader may have led the herd astray, while other believe the elephants could be searching for a new habitat.

Don't gawk or leave corn or salt out; keep your distance and don't disturb them with firecrackers, residents have been told.

A Yunnan government notice said the herd had "caused trouble 412 times" there.

Stories abound, including of one elderly man who the Jimu News channel said had hidden under his bed in his retirement home as trunks were poked into rooms.

I love elephants. Hope they are safe and find appropriate things to eat. The Chinese kill elephants for their tusks, which they carve into beautiful things. Beastly people.

the Chinese hunt elephants, kill them for their tusks

YES!
There is something special about them.

Once read about an elephant with chains on his legs trapped UNDERWATER in a flooded river for days and survived!

"... elephants: Herd on mammoth 500km trek..."

Pun Intended? Or no pun intended?

Did he have unusually large ears and an arrogant expression on his phiz?

Not ZeroBama!!! Elephants are smart.

H. Ross Perot? I kind of liked the guy.

I haven’t seen it in person, but watched a show on tv a long term me ago where elephants were swimming between some islands in Asia. The only thing above water was the trunk. Watching these beasts do a mostly submerged dog paddle for something more than a mile was pretty inspiring. I don’t recall how far they were able to swim, but anything beyond crossing a river seemed amazing.

When I first saw this story Kipling’s short story “Letting in the Jungle” came to mind.

Be careful. There are people here who think it’s just fine to spend many thousands of dollars to officials in African nations so that they can hunt elephants.

(They will condemn you as a ‘liberal’ if you object.)

Everybody knows, even the elephants, that if you can get on a freighter to Mexico, you’ll be a US Citizen within weeks.

—”Be careful. ...”

My ethic and that of my friends, do not shoot unless you are going to eat it, or it is fixing to eat me.

That said since my grandkids now have ipads and email addresses, I like to send them short and cute animal videos.

Most of their favorites are baby elephants.
I watch many to find just the right ones to send.

A common theme is the injured wild elephant approaching humans for help.

Anthropomorphic?

How would I know? But We have lived with Australian Shepherds managing our house forever and they are much smarter than most would ever suspect.

That reminds me, I wonder if the local dogs were howling near the shaking high-rise building in China?

—”ancestral migration?”

Back in the day, the Chinese heard of Hannibal and his mighty battle tank elephants...

The newest addition to the Chinese army, circa year zero!

I’ve seen a similar story about a panda in China, seemingly crying for help outside of someone’s house.
