The Code 9 Project, preventing PTSD and suicide during PTSD awareness month

June is PTSD awareness month. A national nonprofit organization is educating and training professional front-line workers, veterans and their families on preventing PTSD and suicide.

"The wear and tear is real, and if they aren't receiving the training and the resources to prevent a breakdown and injury like PTSD or aren't receiving the resources and the support, things like suicide happen. And that's just not OK with our organization," said Brandielee Baker, founder and president of The Code 9 Project.

Advertisement Brandielee Baker is a former first responder, PTSD survivor, currently the founder and president of The Code 9 Project. She created the project to have a team of chaplains, active duty officers diagnosed with PTSD, critical incident trainers and specialized trauma experts.

The team educates the prevention of PTSD and suicide in law enforcement, first responders and military communities.

"The interactive training, the intensives are absolutely necessary and ongoing training because we can talk about tips. You go back out into the field and you're inundated with stress. You forget how to take care of yourself. You forget the resources," Baker said.

"How effective do you think these prevention methods are?" KSBW asked.

Baker answered, "Very effective, extremely effective. We provide valuable resources, things that are accessible to individuals, accessible to departments and accessible as a family unit as well."

During this pandemic, Baker said the need has grown tremendously with people or departments needing their PTSD and suicide prevention help.

"So their resiliency has been evaporated and we're still asking them to answer calls, to answer their peers and support them. But we're not giving them any reprieves," Baker said.

The Code 9 Project delivers in-person training for these high-stressed careers. The team will go to people or departments wherever they are across the U.S.

"You can't digitized crisis intervention. You just can't. It can be a start, a gateway to get help. You can reach out to us. You can text us, you can text a therapist. But human connection is absolutely needed to truly heal," Baker said.

If you need help or know someone that might, Baker said don't hesitate.

"So we're here. Reach out. You're not alone," Baker said.

The Code 9 Project has a national helpline that is 24/7 for all Frontline Workers, First Responders and Veterans. The Code 9 Project national helpline number is 844-HOPE-247, or 844-467-3247

Funny stuff. I had some guy ask me if “I double check my locks every night” and if I “kept a pistol next to me at night” and some other questions like that. He informed me that I had PTSD and that they had programs that could fix me.
I declined the offer:
1. If I do have PTSD, then I’ve had it for 54 years now and I’m fine with it.
2. PTSD is the normal, rational reaction human beings have who are subjected to sustained fear, deprivation, and seeing good people die. A guy would have to be nuts not to have it.
