The Monthly Fiber Arts Thread is a monthly gathering of people that love yarn and fabric of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first project, to experienced fiber artists and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
It is impossible to hijack the Monthly Fiber Arts Thread. Knitting, crochet, quilting, weaving, general crafting - there is no telling where it will go, and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our Fiber Arts Ping List.
NOTE: This is a once a Month Ping List. We do post to the thread during the month. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Fiber Arts fans are welcomed any time!
Thank you for the thread!
I have no Fiber Arts activity to report, for several months now. Including I have not fixed the strap on the dress for my daughter-in-law. My bad.
But my daughter got moved 1,500 miles away last week, and one other “life-changing” situation is expected before the end of July...
So maybe I will try to get back to some sewing in a few more weeks. I think she’s going to need new placemats, at least....maybe some covers for throw pillows....
I haven’t picked up my crochet hook for quite some weeks now, too.
I still have a box of scarves and baby blankets to mail to ‘Warm Up America.’ I think I’ll wait for a sting of 100-degree days to mail that off to them, LOL!
I do have a cute crochet hook storage idea that I’ll post about later. My craft room/office is SUCH a bloody mess right now, it’s ridiculous! I need a rainy day to work on that. Also, I need less half-done projects or more storage space! :)
“A clean craft room/office is the sign of a sick mind.”
I’d be in someone else’s crafty shoes if all my projects were done and out of the way. ;o]
OH! I need that! Where did you find that photo, and what was it originally?
Did you see the turtleneck sweaters on the greyhounds? The photo showed up on Facebook last year and I though those dogs looked so elegant!
They sell them on Etsy and/or eBay. Hand made wooden crochet hook holders. I can’t find a direct link to that one; it was a random picture on the www.
Yes, I saw the Greyhounds in turtlenecks. Very classy.
14 reasons why knitters make the BEST partners
1. They’re full of so much knitting love that they’ll sit through almost anything on the telly as long as they can knit – football, documentaries about tractors, even the cricket!
2. Everyone’s always in awe of the mind-bogglingly clever things they make!
3. There’s always a woolly tea cozy on hand so your tea doesn’t get cold.
4. They’re not needy and attention-seeking because they’re NEVER bored!
5. No-one in the family is ever chilly. Shawls, blankets, balaclavas, socks, cosy cardigans. You name it, then can knit it.
6. They’re experts in super-cute personalised gift ideas, such as baby bootees, which make everyone go: ‘Ahhhhhhh!’
7. A knitter’s home is always weirdly insulated (although we can’t imagine why wall-to-wall yarn hasn’t caught on as a style statement).
8. If you’re good to them, tailored handknits in statement colours may very well be in your future. Looking sharp!
9. Their antics definitely keep the cat busy. Sweet dreams, puss.
10. No-one they know ever has to go shopping for a Christmas jumper.
11. If you’ve got an itch, they’ve always got a whole stash of needles to scratch it with.
12. They are excellent multi-taskers.
13. Play your cards right and they’ll even teach you how to do it yourself.
14. If you need a cute lucky toy charm for the dashboard of your car, they have quite a selection for you to pick from.
So I'm actually back to “fiber arts” after I got into a funk last year & didn't do much ... so far, it's knitting mostly. I had 3 “prayer” projects due in May – a scarf & 2 pairs of finger-less “chemo” mittens. I am currently contemplating making a lace knit baby blanket – 2 patterns I'm looking at & I have the technical skills to do them, just not sure if I have the patience.
Our church gives each high school graduate a 'prayer scarf' as they head off to college, military, or whatever they're doing. The ladies of the church who knit/crochet each make one for a specific graduate. I did a crochet one for a girl in Vanna's Choice, color silver blue. I did not get a pic of the scarf with the fringe … it turned out really nice.
As for the chemo mitts, 2 of my niece's friends have breast cancer & started chemo the same week. She was really frustrated, felt like she needed to "do" something, not just offer verbal encouragement, etc. I offered some “chemo” mitts she could give them. A charity group in our area makes them to donate to chemo centers – I use their pattern. Evidently, the treatment rooms are really cold & keeping hands warm is a problem. My niece took me up on the offer, so I made two pairs of mitts - my niece wanted pink and I found a beautiful rose pink yarn (color "Rosewater"). I made them as 'prayer' mitts & my niece added her own prayers, once she got them. I provided a gift bag/card for the local pair & my niece delivered them in person. The other pair + card had to be mailed out of state.
After the last year, I find spending time outside is what soothes my ruffled soul feathers the most. If I'm not in the garden or mowing, I find sitting in the porch swing, watching the hummingbirds at the feeder, listening to podcasts & knitting to be very relaxing. I am trying NOT to buy more yarn – I am knitting up my small balls of leftovers from other projects. One knitted finger-less mitten is about 41 yards. So far, I have knitted 23 pairs of mittens! I'll give a few away to family members - some of them actually like the finger-less mittens a lot & will ask for another pair when they lose one or a pair wears out. Anything left over, I can donate. You will notice lots of 'tails' that need weaving in – my least favorite thing to do …. when I run out of yarn (happening soon), then I'll start on the tails.
The most recent mitts - not bagged up/organized yet.
Pairs 1 - 14.
Your needle work, and that poem and your HEART are just so lovely. You’re a Keeper! :)
Love the scarf - I LOVE Vanna’s yarns. The color pallet is just excellent.
Here's the shawl I made out of the silver blue ...... it's called "Sweet Scallops" ... stinker to start & you have to pay attention, but it really turns out pretty.
“...stinker to start & you have to pay attention, but it really turns out pretty.”
Patterns like that lose me after the first row. I am all about the simple stitches. ;)
I’m still trying to perfect a simple Granny Square!
Who put me in charge of this thread? LOL!
That looks like one of my test-tube storage racks, only made of wood instead of wire.
Interesting idea.
I just love those crochet hooks!!!
I am deep into knitting right now. My “almost” daughter is getting married July 30, and I am knitting her a “wedding ring” shawl. I had a hard time deciding on the pattern, and then it took me several tries to get the correct weight and color yarn. I settled on a lace weight linen in a periwinkle color that had to be specifically dyed for me. That’s why I am now knitting like it’s a job, instead of a hobby.
I also learned a lot about the correct needles. The lace circular needle was great with tiny points for lifting threads in complex stitches and being made of brass so things don’t slip...... except the needle part was only about 3 inches long and not enough for me to really get a hold on. I settled on bamboo straight needles. The tip is not as small, but I can really hold them well for twisting the work when I go to knit in the back loop.
The good thing is Mr G says he’ll take care of dinner and dishes so I can knit!!! What a guy.
He’s a Keeper! :)
Wish I still had mine! I liked to use them as a centerpiece with a single flower stem in each test tube. Country Cute!
Bought them for a song at that UW overstock store between Verona and Oregon - can't remember the name, but we'd go there on Fridays and find all sorts of TREASURES!
