Great Lakes are prone to rip currents and sudden blowups of rough waters. They are not oceans but large enough for all the hazards of open water to beware. Took a ferry across Lake Michigan, quite a stretch where there was no sight of land either behind us or before us. Lake bottoms are littered with shipwrecks, some of considerable size like the great ore carrying lakers.

It can drop off very quickly, one minute the water is up to your knees, another step and it is over your head. If you can’t swim you are screwed.
