Is there a local IRS office you can visit?

Our small town (38,000) has one. Visiting is a surreal experience. There were two ‘agents’ and one armed guard. You walk in, the armed guard directs you to a sign in screen where you enter your problem. You then sit and wait. Under no circumstances can you do anything with your phone. If you take your phone out, you’ll be directed to leave the building.

Our tax question was unusual and complicated and the local people were useless. However, they should be able to deal with your problem. Accessing IRS through the phone is even stranger.

Good luck.

That is surreal! Sounds a lot like visiting the local Social Security office here in Charlotte...except they let you use your phone while you wile away the long wait. I even have to remove my belt when passing thru the metal detector!

Coeur d’Alene, Idaho (population 55,000 and about 100,000 in surrounding areas) doesn’t have a field office. Nearest one is 45 miles away in Spokane, so almost a 100 mile trip, two hours in the car, and $20 in gas. Yuck.

“the local people were useless” — that is my expectation if I go there.
