These two "strangers" approached each other and shook hands on purpose. My guess is that this was some sort of drug deal set up online. The suspect knew the kid would have cash on him.
Word of advice to skinny nerds who are visiting a city they aren't familiar with: DON'T SET UP DRUG DEALS IN PLACES YOU DON'T KNOW WITH STRANGERS!

According to the article, the beaten guy was robbed of $900. I was wondering why he had so much money on him. I think you answered that question.
