Fresh air respirators and/or active ventilation/toxic fume purging required for entry into such confined spaces. Very tragic result from chancing it.
Almost guarantee it was H2S. It doesn’t take much to deaden the smell factor and then you simply pass out and continue to breathe it until you die.
Sad!
Aren’t there some sort of gas masks that should be worn around manure pits?
SO2 can kill you.
Ack! What a way to check out.
5.56mm
The death of the daughters and mom seem especially tragic since none of them likely had the strength necessary to rescue the unconscious males from that pit.
Terrible. Confined space safety is no joke.
That really stinks.
Can’t think of a shittier way to go. Good place to put congresscreeps.
That’s what I posted as well. Too many people do not know about or understand H2S and farming/ranching.
Anything made of carbon, when it starts to decompose will release H2S. If there is enough, it will pool in low-lying areas and two breaths are all it takes to overpower and kill!
This was on the local radio this morning. They said the rescue crews had to treat it like a cold-water rescue with full scuba equipment and sealed suits. No details on how much they had to swim or if that was to just get close to the pit.
A variation on “silent but deadly”.
Has Mike Rowe ever done that job?
I was thinking the exact same thing. I took hours and hours and hours of confined space training when I was a USCG inspector. We had to inspect cargo tanks and other various things on ships. CO2 lockers are another big hazard on ships. Leaks happen, and the CO2 literally piles up on the deck until it reaches the height of your mouth.
Each CO2 locker needs a kick plate that opens a hole in the door and lets gravity drain the CO2 out of the room.
This is why when people started saying, “CO2 is a greenhouse gas” I just laughed.
Impossible. Heavier than air and essential for phytoplankton and vegetation growth everywhere on the Earth. If it were lighter than O2, the earth would be barren of plant growth, and thus, probably most life beyond microbial.
Tragic. It appears from the obits that these three sons were the only children, all three working the family farm.

How so?
They could find a source of carbon and compost the manure which would give them another product to sell, compost. Only equipment needed is a loader which they probably already have. No fluent pumps, no deadly fumes.
Same thing happens if one stays in a media news room for longer than a few minutes.Or watching anyone on Fox since their betrayal of the country and a sitting President.
Makes me sick to my stomach every time I think about it.
Shitty way to die
