Horrible. These kinds of stories come up every couple of years. Usually, one falls in and the others try to rescue them and suffer the same fate.

It is H2S and Ammonia. But Ammonia will still assault your senses while it is at a deadly level.

Do not enter manure pits without either: A self-contained air supply like those fire fighters use. (Dust masks or other cartridge respirators will not filter out the toxic gases nor will they provide the oxygen requirement to work in confined spaces such as manure pits.) OR Test before entering. Test the oxygen level to make sure that adequate oxygen is available. Also test for hydrogen sulfide, a particularly toxic gas, to be sure that concentrations are safe (less than 10 ppm).

Confined space rules are written in blood.

That’s the truth.

Thanks. I had never heard of this danger but it seem utmost caution is required.

They could find a source of carbon and compost the manure which would give them another product to sell, compost. Only equipment needed is a loader which they probably already have. No fluent pumps, no deadly fumes.

If there is a manure pit, there is probably a large herd of cattle or hogs. I don't know that farm situation. It can't be spread on a field of tall, growing crops. Immense mountains of manure on land contaminate the soil and groundwater. Recycling into compost is a monumental task, a virtual industry apart from farming.

My older brother was killed in a farm accident five days before he would have turned 16. I was 11. That was 51 years ago. It was very painful for our family.

Take your flippant attitude to the funeral of those brothers, and see what happens.

Idiot. Go smoke your dope and listen to your doper musicians.

Recycling into compost is a monumental task, a virtual industry apart from farming.

It's no more technical than a large scale livestock operation, wouldn't take up a lot more room and they'd have a product they can sell for $30/yd. One person on a loader could maintain it for 5-10 hours a couple of times a week.

Have you ever had to handle manure from a large herd of cattle?

My Grandpa used to tell a joke about a man who died in a silo.

He went in there looking for a corner to pee in.

What difference does that make?

There are plenty of farms doing it.

All kinds of mechanisms at work. Ammonia and hydrogen sulfide are downright poisonous. Combine them with methane and carbon dioxide and you displace breathable air even if the other gasses don’t reach lethal levels.

The percentage of livestock farms that sell their manure as retail compost is about the same as grain farmers who sell their corn as boxed corn flakes. Possible? I suppose so, but not all that simple.

In high school my daughter worked a summer job at a daycare center.
She was asked to clean a large amount of surfaces with bleach.......but didn’t realize she needed to dilute it.
Being very conscientious she completed the task.....

She became very very ill!

My brother-in-law was offered a job training g to inspect some kinds of huge tanks lsued in the oil fields. It’s a very deadly job apparently and so he turned it down. Can’t remember what the tanks contained, but theymhad to be monitored very regularly. That ki d of work would just give me the heebie jeebies
