The link tells the story of the growing crime. Here is a DFU report of the crime while visiting the grandkids in Tacoma.
Late at night, perhaps around 11pm, a neighbor across the street was returning home from work and saw a lowlife scumbag or scumbags attempting to steal our Honda Element catalytic converter. They had cut through one pipe and almost through the other, but they fled the scene when they realized the neighbor saw what they were doing. The catalytic converter now hangs on the ground and I have to get it repaired or replaced. Thank you, scumbags. Thank all the aholes who do not support the police and wanted these kinds of crimes to be overlooked. Hence, we are watching our society being destroyed by these lowlife scumbag criminals --- BLM, ANTIFA, the communist DemocRATS, those who organized and perpetrated the theft of the 2020 election, and the George Soros district attorneys who do not throw their asses in jail. Defund the police? My ass! The elitists have private security so they have no problems with crime. As for the rest of us, the same elitists want to take away our guns. As an aside, when the report asks about gender --- male, female, unknown --- here is a tip to all those who have trouble determining the correct answer. Look in your pants and it should be pretty much self evident.

there is an upstream o2 sensor before the catalytic converter and a downstream o2 sensor after the catalytic converter...
both read exhaust emissions and instruct the ecm (electronic control module) on proper air/fuel ratios for the electronic fuel injection system...
a vehicle won’t run properly and the check engine light will constantly be on...

I researched a lot of places and the idea was mixed. At this point I’m not concerned for myself (garage locked and alarmed), but seems like no one has a real consistent answer and everyone has one it appears.

they now have to be taken to car dealerships or repair shops that can afford to keep up with the latest tools and equipment that is required to work on these vehicles...
one main advantage is today’s vehicles are more reliable than vehicles from at a minimum of 40 years ago...

I hate State Farm. A couple decades ago a woman ran a red light and T-boned my car, totaling it. I filed a claim against State Farm and they blew me off, refusing to pay damages I asked for. The State Farm agent literally laughed at me when I dropped a claim form at the agency. So my lawyer filed a lawsuit, got a settlement for ten times what I asked, including medical and for the car. I was the one laughing then at those jerks.

I’m joking about the length of sentence, But some states are getting serious. The South Carolina House, for example, has approved a bill that would make buying or selling stolen catalytic converters a separate crime that could bring up to three years in prison.
In Seattle, which averages 7 stolen a night, under the new measure in voting, the crime for stealing a catalytic converter will be upped to a Class C felony, which means thieves can get up to 5 years.
Sentence lengths and fines have been raised by Michigan, Indiana, Missouri and Hawaii to name a few. They are getting serious. But until they just shoot them the price of platinum will be a real teaser for them.

UPDATE: Tow truck took it to shop this morning. This particular driver has towed 6-7 a week after these cat thefts.
