California wildfire smoke prompts school closures in Reno, Nevada

The poor air quality on Monday resulted in canceled flights and closures of schools, parks and popular summer beaches in the Reno and Lake Tahoe areas.

The National Weather Service said prevailing winds from the west mean “significant smoke and air quality impacts” will continue much of this week, affecting Reno, Lake Tahoe, Carson City and other areas.

In Las Vegas, more than 400 miles (644 kilometers) south of Reno, Clark County air quality officials issued a smoke advisory for Tuesday.

Yes, mixed feelings about this. I think the schools have good filtration, so they should be in school, but the teachers get themselves another paid day off. Sadly in our neighborhood yesterday, he sure lots of kids outside playing in the smoke enjoying that day off. Pretty ignorant of the parents to let their kids out in the smoke, no decent filtering, etc.

And I have a decent Air quality meter, we’re about 800 feet above the valley floor, and AQI Outside has been over 500, inside, in the basement in the mid 300s, and upstairs in the low 200s. We have ordered some air purifiers that claim HEPA H13, So will be curious to see what they accomplish indoors.

Last night’s full moon over Southern California was orange—probably because of the smoke, although the fires are 400 miles away.

Current AQI in Reno is 289. Around Lake Tahoe it’s off scale with some locations measuring over 1,000. Second day for school closings. But nobody is turning off the flashing school zone lights morning and afternoon. :-}

Air quality-wise, can’t see how sending kids home is any better than keeping them in school.

Our AQI in Reno has been really bad through all of this.
They need to catch the rest of the arsonists and stop their slow
murder of the elderly and infirm by weeks of heavy smoke.

Today’s peak so far is 473 ug/M3. Yesterday was 492.

Why are they worried about air quality?

They have the children breathe through dirty masks all day-What's the problem?

Around Lake Tahoe it’s off scale with some locations measuring over 1,000. Second day for school closings.

Not too surprising since the region now has its own 100K acre Caldor fire that originated southwest of the lake, in the vicinity of Grizzly Flats.
