I remember visiting some friends same age as me at that time(45-54)in California twenty years ago. He came up with a pirated DVD copy of the new Spiderman movie and we all watched it.
To me it was ho-hum. I would not spend money to see it at a theater or buy a DVD of it. I would not even buy superhero comics in my youth. I preferred Classics Illustrated.

To them it was great.

Classics Illustrated were great! HG Wells, Melville, and Twain really opened up my imagination and made me want to seek out the full books later on.

If you were to read The Amazing Spider-Man #61 and the previous issue back-to-back, it would be hard to believe they were both from the same series. The tone shifts so dramatically that it is slightly jarring, and it is impressive that Nick Spencer can write both styles so well. This issue is fun, action-packed, and quite funny.
